250 years of Battle of Plassey (June 23, 1757)
The Battle of Plassey, the ironical battle which paved way for British Rule in India was fought on June 23, 1757, exactly 250years ago.
Here is some history for indiamike readers : THE BATTLE OF PLASSEY - June 23, 1757 It is ironical -- and tragic -- that an innocent flower would be compelled, by history, to take on connotations of war and loss. Polash, a bright red flowering tree -- also known as Flame of the Forest -- lends its name to a small village called Palashi on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, 25 kilometres south of Murshidabad, and 150 kilometres from Kolkata. What happened under these colourful trees on June 23, 1757, was a battle that would change the face of a nation. On that day, exactly 250 years ago, the forces of Siraj-Ud-Daulah, Nawab of Bengal, clashed with troops of the British East India Company led by Robert Clive. When the fight was finished, the establishment of British rule in Bengal was set in motion. Eventually, all of India would fall to the Union Jack. For those who haven't paid as much attention to their history textbooks as they ought to have, here's a refresher course. ... read on at http://www.rediff.com/news/2007/jun/23spec.htm Moderator note: Copy-pasting of third-party material is regulated by this site's forum rules. Thanks.
I recently read "Clive-The life and Death of a British Emperor'.. which covers this battle. Interesting book, though for an Indian, disturbing.

Although disturbing.......it is the fact and every Indian should read and keep in their mind the outcome of each such battles in history ..............these battles send the message to all Indians that we should stop quarrelling among ourselves on linguistic/regional basis and live unitedly.....that is where India can stand. We are a unique country in this world and can only survive and prosper unitedly.
I cherish my childhood playfully (1-10 years) in Murshidabad district, and visited the historical palaces and ruins of Nawabi Murshidabad several times, and can still loiter in the streets there without any guide......descendents of Mir Jafar still resides in Murshidabad in their anchestral house but now lives a simple life as a common men.. History of Murshidabad is very interesting and shows how the British first acted as kingmakers with puppet Nawabs in the throne and later took over all themselves. |
