Something I've been wanting to do for a while is The Trans-Siberian....and I am! Flying Friday night to Beijing, get on the train on Tuesday and arrive in St Petersburg about 4 weeks later (via Mongolia, Lake Baikal, Ekaterinburg, Moscow, Suzdal).

Hot and dry = good. Here it's hot and humid and it's raining most afternoons. After St Petes, I'm flying down to Turkey for a couple of weeks... and that's going to be bloody hot in August.

Ten Places I have to see:
1) India/Nepal (will travel there in August)
2) Egypt
3) Trans-siberian railway from St. Petersburg to Beijing (visiting Russia, Mongolia, China)
4) Cuba
5) Uganda & Rwanda
6) West Africa (Ghana, Togo, Benin)
7) Morocco
8) Chile
9) Australia & New Zealand
10) Mali

Plus all the other countries I haven't been to yet!!!

Places I've been that you have to see:
1) The Amazon, Brazil/Peru/Ecuador (amazing sights and sounds)
2) Victoria Falls, Zambia & Zimbabwe (spoils you for all other falls)
3) Zanzibar, Tanzania (the coolest, tastiest island on the planet!)
4) Machu Picchu, Peru (mystical lost city in the Andes Mountains)
5) Tikal, Guatemala (gorgeous Mayan archaeological site in the Peten jungle)
6) Lake Nakuru, Kenya (from afar the lake looks pink from the thousands of pink flamingos)
7) Belfast & Derry, Northern Ireland (fantastic murals, warm people, grrrrreat beer)
8) Chobe Delta, Botswana (watch 100 elephants swim in front of your boat crossing the river)
9) Robben Island, South Africa (take boat from Cape Town to see historic prison where Mandela was held)
10) San Francisco Bay Area (OK I'm biased cause this is my home but it is beautiful here!)

1. Tash Rabat, Kyrgyzstan, middle of a summer snow storm - highly recommended. 2. The pyramids in a snow storm - yep, New Years eve 1987 - coldest winter in Egyptian history (and that is one hell of a long history...)- and I dont like snow (unless I have my skis on.) - on the icy theme...3.waking up in a mongolian ger and not being able to open the door as the snow outside is so deep, then riding a horse through said snow for 3 days in the wilds 4. driving an old russian jeep across the blue ice on lake baikal to go ice fishing. Maybe on this icy theme as it is so bloody freezing in NZ at the moment. Oh to be travelling again...give me pre monsoonal indian heat any day. Dil.

Zanzibar was a fascinating mix of Muslim and island culture. One day you can get lost in the maze of alleys in Stone Town and the next relax on your own beach. It was known as the Spice Island and still have working spice plantations. The spice tours are fun and tasty and you can get ice cream in any flavor in Stone Town - clove ice cream takes some getting used to! Every night you can go to Forodhani Gardens and get a huge plate of fresh lobster and shrimp for $3. It is touristy but there are plenty of places 'off the beaten track.' I'm so jealous! I want to go back!

oh my god, that sounds awesome! I hope I am able to do this -- I was invited to do a yoga workshop in Tanzania and my friend is making reservations on Zanzibar. I would love to do a safari, but am drawn to oceans, always.....I need the beach and sun and water.....

now if I could only find an affordable flight....

by the way, you have a GREAT travel website!

Thanks! Yes, definitely go if you can. East Africa is beautiful country! Ngorongoro Crater is fabulous and easy to book a tour in Arusha. Flights are pretty expensive - especially flying into Dar Es Salaam. If you have a few extra days, you could save hundreds by flying in and out of Nairobi - Arusha is a shuttle ride away. Try to work it out!
