You can trust the navigator of the coracle & try a short ride to get rid of your fear like Naveena did. Ronak.

Hmm, it's thanks to you that this thread got rejuvenated
. Actually, we were also told that the sight of the actual multiple waterfalls was on the other side. But, the photo of the watch tower which i have posted gave us almost 75% of the view of the multiple waterfalls. But, contrary to the localites insisting on coracle ride to watch those waterfalls, i did see a route towards that side, immediately after we cross a hanging bridge. One needs to walk a little distance and can reach that place without much difficulty, at least i felt so.
Infact, the 18th photo of my write up, shows reads 'Wa to 8 main waterfalls - Gini'. I think snonymous you are referring that - so one can take up that route & enjoy the view! We did not venture that side as it was turning out to be a hot day & somebody also told that the view from watch tower also quite good.
Coracle ride to that place, whether safe or not, i wouldn't venture.

I have heard that the Gira Waterfalls at the Saputara Hills are really enormous and worth seeing in the monsoons.
Any idea anyone?

Coracle ride a must??
Hi after reading all the reviews about this place i've decided to visit here in july 1st week 2012, also im very afraid of the coracle ride..is there by any way i can avoid going by coracle and get the views of the falls?? also i'll be carrying my DSLR and is there any good place here to go for some photography without taking too many risks??
Coracle ride not a must

Try to check if it has rained sufficiently before you visit. Coracle ride is not a must, you can walk up almost all the places around the waterfalls. I was told that the coracle ride gives the best views of the waterfalls but I was petrified to take any chance. If it has rained heavily the currents are strong and the flimsy coracle on the water sends shiver down the spine. I could do without it. Take it only if you really enjoy it.
I think the waterfalls at 'Gini' would be best as there is a cluster of waterfalls in this location. The watch tower gives a very good view, you can take photographs from there.
Hoganekkal is notorious for accidents, so take all precautions. The place is beautiful and worth spending the whole day for those who do not under-estimate the might of nature! One will get ample locations to photograph IF IT IS NOT CROWDED
.Enjoy.
PS: Also keep lot of change (1, 2, 5 Rupee) - you would be expected to pay at every damn point.

@naveenamohanrao thanks for the quick reply.yep I'm gonna try roaming all around before taking any coracle rides, what u mentioned about 'Gini' and the watch tower. What was going on in my mind is most of the visitors mentioned that u've to cross the river to get the views of the falls, so was wondering if I've to take the coracle compulsorily for getting the views of the falls.

In my post no 3 on this thread (click here), you can see from the 3rd photograph, there is foot-over bridge which helps people cross over to the other side. Also there is a hanging bridge which aids in reaching the other bank without having to get in to water. Also there are concrete paths through out which has iron railings on both sides. Unless one wants to get into water there is hardly any way one would come in close contact with water in this place.

But at one point, as you have correctly mentioned, en-route Gini falls, one needs to cross a stream only by getting into the water
and you will have to even pay for it
!!!
