Dear CH,
You dont need subtitles for most of the Bollywood movies.... even it is there half of the time it will read.... hero singing... heroine dancing... villain grunting... moans & more moans.... sobbing aloud.... & so on....

Ha that's what I thought until the advent of subtitles!! Ashoka was a different film with the help of subtitles a revelation you might say.

Many of the films I seen first in Hindi were better with the sub-titles!

I agree cyberhippie, that sub-titles do make a difference if one dosen't understand Hindi. However, in movies with powerful dialogues and punch lines; eg. Deewar and Shakti(just to name a couple); the essence is completely lost in translation.

Both CH & Shimla u r right but the buswallas are more likely to put on the Bollywood potboilers which do not need subtitles. About translation yes Shimla u r right again. I wish I knew Italian when I watch movies by Fellini or Swedish when I watch Bergman's movies....
