Varanasi to Kathmandu!
Hi, this site is very useful, and you people have great suggestions.
I am planning on spending two weeks in Varanasi this September, and on my last few days there I thought of going to Kathmandu. I wanted to know how to get there without flying, I think I will do that in the way back. Are train, bus good choices? what about hiring a driver-guide and doing so? Thx |

The (bus) route gets described here: http://www.seat61.com/Nepal.htm#Vara...ndu%20by%20bus . Those sub-links don't seem to work well, so you may have to scroll along that page. If it's entirely up-to-date I can't promise you, but should basically be correct I think.
There are no trains in Nepal (or none to speak of, anyway). Car & driver I can't tell you about, just that keep in mind going one way you'll naturally have to pay for the return fare as well. Could work out rather costly even on a return trip I imagine, and I'm not sure how keen drivers would be on cross-border travel, or what that might cost you. Would be interesting to know really. If it's worth overlanding to Kathmandu for a "few days" I likewise can't tell you, I've never been to Nepal. It may well not be. That bus ride alone is said there to take some 18-21 hours, excluding connection times and an apparent possible night's stay in the border town of Sunauli.

Overlanding - expect a fairly gruellling 2 day bus journey - overnighting at a dodgy hotel in Sonauli (a dodgy town)- its an experience allright. Flying is a far better option if you can afford.

If you have to see Katmandu, and you have limited time, just fly.
Out of budget range? Stay in Varanasi longer. A place worth spending the extra days, IMHO! |
