Travel from Chennai to Mamallapuram

We'll be arriving in Chennai around 10PM on the Shatabdi from Mysore and we'd like to continue on to Mamallapuram that same evening. LP indicates 30 buses per day as well as taxis. Would the buses run as late as 10PM and is the bus station anywhere near the rail station? Should we be forced to take a taxi, is the LP price of 900Rps still reasonably accurate? Another option would be a good hotel (up to 1500 Rps) near the train station and then the bus in the morning. All suggestions are most appreciated.

The bus station is quite a ways from the train station, but a rickshawill take you there. I arrived around 2am on my last trip, and went straight to the bus station, where I had anough time to wash my face and hang aout a while before the first AM bus left. It wasn't too crowded and I was in Mamalapuram very quickly!

I don't know how late those buses run ... sorry.

Well, it is ---and it isn't!

Following the same road that Central Station is on Westward brings on to the junction just nearby Koyambedu. In the night it would be pretty quick to cover that distance.

@Bruce,

Yes, you have buses @ 10pm too to Mahabalipuram BUT from Chennai Central JN , you need to take an Auto to "Koyambedu Bus Stand" [Around 100 rs] and then board this bus. By this way , at the minimum you could reach mamallapuram @ around 12 Midnight and I am not sure whether you want to do it this way !

Hope this helps !

Good point, Pmvelu. Makes more sense to just stay the night somewhere near the bus station.
