There's a prepaid taxi stand at New Delhi rail station; tell them which hotel and they'll tell you the price. Keep the receipt until you reach the hotel you asked for.
The map is not the territory. --Alfred Korzybski
I always asked locals in a shop in this area where I wanted to have a taxi to know what is the real price....The people in the street mostly dont know either because they dont live at this place.
Prepaid taxis are the best from the railwaystation or the airport.
Have fun

SOS: Missing Person...
Please look at this thread, even if you are not in India.: Have you seen Jonathan Spollen?
He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

Hi,
Thanks for your answer. I do not have preferred hotel in Delhi yet and to be honest I do not know when and from I will arrive to Delhi.
My story in short: I will depart on 22nd of Octiber to Delhi. I will land to Indhira Ghandi Airport. But I will fly to Leh in 4 hours so no hotel is
needed. From Leh I will fly to Varanasi. After Varanasi I go to Agra. After Agra to Jaipur. After Jaipur to Jaislamer or Jodhpur it is not decided yet
then to Bikaner, and after Bikaner to Delhi and spend 2 days in Delhi and then go home. I asked my question because I always got lost when
I first arrive in a foreign country and many times I got fooled by the taxi dirvers when I got out from a train or bus station. So now I thought I ask in
advance regarding the prices. To ask a domestic is a good idea but my experience is usually at bus/train stations and airports all the domestics
are taxi dirvers
.
so this is it. I think I will be frequent visitor of indiamike.com nowadays since I put together my trip of India and I have many questions.
thanks.

Since many taxi charges depend on distance, it's hard to give you a good answer if you can't tell us where you're going. Maybe when your plans are more certain, you can revive the question.
I have one destination: from Leh aiport to Sia La Guesthouse http://sialaguesthouse.free.fr/.
What would be the cost of this very short trip?
thanks,
klajosh

All cities in your list are tourist places, so the main station will have a pre-paid auto/taxi stand. Whether it is working or not, will depend on time & luck!In general, autos are for shorter distances & will charge around 10-15 rs/km, with lower per km rate for longer distances. Most would also expect a min fare of 30-40 rs in most areas & 50-100 rs from station/airport.
Taxis are for longer distances (some would refuse shorter distances) & will charge around 15-20 rs/km, with the higher number typically providing a decent a/c cab. Min fare expectation would be around 100 rs.
It always helps if you have a reasonable idea of the distance (using a basic map), so that you have enough room to negotiate. You can also ask a shopkeeper you just did some business with, as they can suggest typical auto rates.
If the auto/taxi wants to go by the meter in a city where they usually never go by meter, avoid that option, as either meter is rigged or the fare conversion chart is fake or they will take a 'tourist' route...
edit: just realised you mentioned 4 persons, so most of the places, either auto will refuse to take the 4th if plying thru a main road (read in front of police) or charge a 1/3rd extra as premium... also, night time or very late night time could increase by a factor of 50-100% depending on the location & distance.
