Taxi fares

Please can you tell me how long it would take to get from Kumarakom train station to Ernakulum train station by taxi.

Also, any idea how much the fare would be?

(I plan to check out of Kumarakom Lake Resort at 12.00 and get to Ernakulum train station by 14.10 - if this possible?! )

Allepey is about 2½ hours, so Kumarakom would be about the same.

The cost depends on the type of car.

A cheap one is a non a/c Indica. You'll pay a bit more for an a/c car.

The Ambasador is comfy and a little more expensive, and the Toyota Qualis is the most common tourist vehicle and is more expensive still. The Qualis is higher up, so you'll get a better view of the surroundings.

You can see a map of Kerala here:

If you email my friend Jenny has a couple of cars and drivers; Tell her John Sinclair gave you her email ID, she'll give you a fair price. Ask is Sajeev is available to drive you - he's a great guy!

Jenny's email is fourens@eth.net

Bus services in kerala are typically better than in other states because of the higher proportion of private transport. If cost is a concern, that is some thing you could look into.

john hasn't visited the site for a couple of months, but there are plenty of members here who are familiar with such costs.

It's not so far.

I tired to hire one from the Airport, they had pre-paid prices and for Kanyakumari they were in range of Rs.1500, which I found too much...

We moved to Bus stand, however right outside were approached by a tout who offered to give a Qualis for Rs.500. We were bit skeptical, however later the car actually turned up and driver later told us that he was from Kanyakumari and came to drop someone to Trivandrum. He had already charged for both ways from the earlier passenger and this is bonus for him.

We payed Rs.625 in all, the premium was for AC.. But I would say Rs.1000 to Rs.1500 would be more realistic figure under normal circumstances.

You don't have to go further than your printer to pick them up.

Book early enough to get reserved seats on your selected trains, and you can be sorted very easily.

Indian railways are very good at judging supply and demand. Trains are often full. If you do not book in advance you will need to be very flexible! You can find yourself up against festivals you didn't know existed that make it impossible to get anywhere!

E-tickets can be printed on your home computer.

I-tickets can be sent to an address in India. (most big cities, not sure if Trivandrum is included)
