Taxi/cost logistics
Good afternoon (in PST anyway)
I've got several minor travel headaches to figure out, and they're probably really trivial. Any help would be much appreciated...ok, here goes it: 1) Kolkata (international terminal): Taxi cost (roughly) from the airport to The Sonar hotel at 1, JBS Halden Avenue? 2) Delhi (domestic terminal): Taxi cost (roughly) from the airport (IGA) to the Hyatt Regency hotel at Bhikaiji Cama Place on Ring Road? 3) Agra (Agra Cantt train station): Taxi cost (roughly) to The Mughal hotel (part of Starwood chain) on Taj Ganj. Also, is the Taj Mahal in walking distance from the hotel (on Google maps it looks like it's less than 2 miles away). Thank you! David |

In Kolkata and Delhi, you can get official "pre paid" taxi vouchers, so that it's all paid for betfore you get in the cab. Keep your receipt until you arrive at your destination.
Not sure about Agra .. |

Taxi prices
I just read that gas costs about $5 a gallon in India. So how is it possible that people tell me I can rent a taxi with driver for about 800 rupees a day? Am I missing something?!

Hi David_B,
Welcome to Calcutta! Don't just say Sonar, say ITC Sonar Bangla to the cabbie. Shouldn't cost you more than INR 200-250 if you hire a cab from the prepaid booth inside the airport. There are privately operated prepaid cabs [normal A/C or non-A/C cars with yellow numberplates] available just outside the airport terminal and they often charge double the fare giving a weird reason that they have to return "without any passenger" to the airport.

They are 8 hours or 80Km maximum..they cost around Rs.500 - 600 for an Indica and Rs.800 must be for a larger car likne Innova or Tavera.

Thanks everybody for your replies - good to know, these things. Regarding these pre-paid taxi booths... umm.. how do I know it's a legit booth?
