Question Self drive in remote Gujarat

I've read that is not really advisable to rent a car and do self drive in india. But I'm considering this for a specific portion of our trip where public transportation is limited.

I'm thinking of landing in Rajkot and then renting a car to head to Porbander. I'd also like to use the car to visit Bhanvad, Ranavav and take a drive along the coast to Veraval and back. I'd then drive back to Rajkot and return the car.

I'd like to do the above in a couple days (I know this is tight) and that's why I'm thinking of renting the car.

There are 4 of us traveling so taxi might not work.

Is this portion of gujarat safe driving in for a north american?

Looking for some advice please.

Cheers,

Self drive cars are very cumbersome to arrange (paperwork, insurance, deposits) even in big cities in India; it will be even more tiresome in smaller towns in Gujarat, unless you know somebody there.

They are more expensive than 'normal' (with driver) cars.

In addition, I wouldn't really advise a foreigner to highway drive in India without enough prior Indian driving experience.

My advice- rent a car and driver. Even an Indica will take 4 of you, provided nobody is too big built. Or better still, a larger car- an Indica can get uncomfortable with 4 on longish drives.

You know my view on Indicas... yes, it'll take four. To the shops and back! And you won't have any room for the shopping.

But the Capt is making a point, rather than talking about individual cars, and I completely agree with it.

Vehicles of all sizes are available to rent, and there's bigger parties than four being driven around India!
