Valparai to Chalakudy is 100 kms scenic and deserted ride through the jungles alongside with the river ... you wont forget the journey for your life...

Perumbavoor to Munnar road is another great one with lots of falls and great hill roads

NH 17 from kasaragod to tellicherry is also great , with lots of beaches alongside the road and also the backwaters

On my stay in India we did a trip from Madikeri, Coorg to Kannur. We had to take an alternative route because the usual road was damaged, so I'm not quite sure where we drove. We started off around 4.30 am, so the first part was pitch dark in thick jungle, but it was amazing - the headlights lit up the road pretty good. Sunrise was amazing while we were crossing the ghats. Pretty good road too, allthough winding - got violently carsick after spending 20 seconds trying to find something in my bag.

Due to the dark we even got to see a huge deer (sambar maybe?) just metres away from the car, just standing there looking at us. Also some random wildlife like rabbits and a wild cat, it was leopard patterned, but I guess it was just a normal cat not some rare specie.

The trip from Dehradun up to Mussoorie too is quite nice when you gain some altitude. But not comparable to the one above.

Oh, there is an animal called the leopard cat. And not common at all, i.e. not easy to glimpse, so good for you.

I just googled it, and I think it's quite probable that we actually saw that one. We were indeed in the middle of the jungle somewhere before sunrise. Looks just like it. Cool.

This is a very useful for those planning a trip especially. I hope it can keep going. Problem with such threads is posters seldom mention where have they covered so readers will never get to know HOW good is their choices. For eg, someone who menbtioned Journey A may not have travelled any other journey in India, and his "best" choice maybe just mild. A rating or score system added or at least some comparisons will be better.

I am planning a trip Oct 2nd half from Kolkata to Siliguri to go into Nepal and out from Pokhara to Lumbini to Varansi and back to Kolkata. I can detour to Darjeeling and around(maybe Gantok or Kalimpong) and the other end for Agra.

I read through the last 5 pages but unfortunately no one mentioned any journey close to where I am planning to go, which road journey(only bus or share-jeep) can I do is closest to scenic ?

Any suggestion will help.

asian -, for all the places you have mentioned there is info in different sub-forums like West Bengal and Sikkim, Crossing the Border (for Nepal), etc. I would suggest to look through them for tips. Other than that, in the plains the best roads to take are the ones that offer the shortest route........to the hills.

The road from Manali to Leh is propably the most beautiful I have been on. Scary as hell yes, but still magnificient. Snow capped mountains, steep gorges and high altitude desert. The road from Leh to Srinagar (via Kargil) was also heavenly in views. I wish to return someday and make that trip again maybe with a motorbike.
