Cool Scenic roads - My picks

Let's start in the NE: :)

1) Bomdilla to Tawang, thru Dirang

That war memorial after Sela Pass is Jaswantgarh, beyond that is a place called Jang, here is the descent from Jang -

Dirang is a very pretty place -

2) Bhalukpong to Bomdilla - The elevation and the curves are fantastic. LonelyAztec, if Delhi-Manali scares you, try this sometime

In the North

1) Binsar to Gwaldam via Bageshwar - my favourite country road in Uttaranchal so far

2) Khirsu till Satpuli (near Lansdowne, garhwal) scenic roads, minimal traffic

3) Gangotri to Harsil

4) Jari to Manikaran (Parvati Valley, Himachal)

I agree with u lonelyaztec, for me also, the east coast road is the most scenic!!.. others areGoa - kanwar-gokarna-mangalore.the driveways in coorg...shillong to silchar- aizawl in the north east and aizawl to champhai(burma border) in mizoram ..countryside roads where one can drive right upto the border and cross over to see a beautiful lake on the burma side.

The Aizawl to Champhai drive is a great one. You keep crossing ridge after ridge dropping down to the river every time. And had a lovely bath in Rih Dil in Burma, although it was pretty cold in February. Silchar to Shillong is also a lovely drive with spectacular scenery along the way. The North East of India is really beautiful.

Most people here are suggesting roads in Himachal, Uttaranchal and North East. Agree that most beautiful and scenic roadways are in the North, high up in the Himalayas.

There are beautiful roads in the south as well.

Hi Aztec,
What about the waterways? I think that’s the unbeaten strength of Southern part of our country.

What is your opinion?

Great drive from Thekkady to Munnar, especially the second half as you climb up to the High Range.

However, and I know it's no longer in India (58 years too late), but coming down the Khyber Pass from the Afghan border to Peshawar is quite something. Maybe it was the view from the top of the truck that helped!

Mikewell,

Any ride on top of the lorry / bus is fantastic.

I hitched a ride on a lorry in Kodaikanal....through the village roads. It was a lorry carrying potatoes.

Me and my friends on top of the potatoes, the experience of watching the green valley unfold..was great.

The south hardly has water You must be referring to Kerala.
In my opinion nothing beats the ganges or Brahmaputra..

Yes, Kerala .
I’ve seen so many photographs of boat rides through the canals (?) under the shed of coconut trees – looks just great .

Actually I use to avail ferry service between Kolkata and Howrah regularly, but the boat ride in Ganges (sply. Varanasi) was a nice experience. Didn’t experience ride through Brahmaputra but it is huge indeed.
