Hi people,
I thought on IM, we must have a compilation of the Best and most Scenic Road Journeys that are possible. It is not that we always take the train or bus or flight to reach a place...many times, we take a cab...and there are many journeys between destinations that have be undertaken by cab on the road.... Here i am providing below - a list of journeys i have undertaken, and a few i have not...but, will be worth the try.. 1. Chennai - Pondicherry - Kanyakumari on East Coast Road - the highways is by the sea, and is by far the most scenic according to me. 2. Bangalore - Ooty - Coimbathore . You drive thru jungles and mountains, and in monsoon, the drive is heavenly. 3. Vythiri ( North Kerala, forest country ) to Varkala ( South Kerala coastal town ). The roads are good...and very green 4. Bangalore - Goa..drive through jungles and western ghats..again heavenly.. 5. Delhi - Manali - beautiful and scary..not to be undertaken by those weak at heart. Cloves wil help you to avoid puking. 6. Mussorie - Sankri - Another scary mountain road trip... Sure, there are lots more..pls share.. I know lots of great journeys / roads / highways are there in North India...as i have not been there, i will not write about them here. Those who have, please share details for the benefit of others. |

shimla-narkanda-baggi-Batshal pur-rohru
try this route once, it has every thing u want; long fast big highway, bad roads, fast single lane snake roads and the scenery is damn gud!!! delhi-manali is like my favorite road trips, been there three time in less then 9 months(twice on bike and once in bus)!! will be doing the same stretch again in september. manali-rohtang is really gud ride as well, this time I will be going to leh. Will give u account of best roads in there as well . |

Allmost all Kerala roads are very scenic except the National Highways. The whole length of national highways in Kerala are clogged with buildings and vehicles.

Tiger,
I know Himalayan roads and the scenery is awesome. What to do, for people down south - reaching Delhi itself is a big journey...So, when i get my long leave from work next time, Shimla - Rohru it will be. |

The Leh - Kargil road is pretty jaw-dropping, as the road from Kargil to Pannikhar.
The road over the Khardung La is fantastic, and must be utterly incredible on a clear day over the Karakorams. The most brown-trousering of all mountain journeys has got to be from Shimla to the Sangla Valley. Look down, whoops a 1000m down! Still an incredible journey though! ![]()

@LonrlyAztec - Hey.. don't u think u are being a bit harsh on Delhi-Manali. The roads are gr8 most part of the year.. and its a comfortable enuff ride... :-)
In Kerala I love the ride thru Wyannad.. the views are simply stunning.... Also the ride from Kochi to Munnar is amazing.. some of the best roads and again the plantations..

CrimsonRiver,
Delhi - Manali Road - is scary as hell - which it is ? Did i say it is not beautiful ? I love this road...thought i have been there only once. I will never ever say that any ride on a Himalayan road is bad. They r great..except for the stomach churning. |

I drove the hyderabad - bangalore - mysore - wayanad - calicut stretch and back this month. ( my third hyd-clt road trip, incidentally ) . mysore - calicut during the monsoon was really heavenly. Descending the wayanad ghats was an experience. zero visibility due to the heavy fog, continuous drizzle, and thick greenery all around. Headlights on all the time, and the fog thinned out & rain strengthened as i descended to the plains. I would do it again and again, whenever i get a chance.
lonelyaztec, i am really interested in doing the ECR-pondy-kanyakumari stretch. any clue on how long it will take? |
