Thumbs up Royal Enfield, such a fascination !

Hi bikers ! Anyone of You has ever bought an Enfield in India (new or 2nd hand) to send it abroad ? Every time I find myself in Delhi I feel in love with the Bullet 500, but I’m afraid by
spending too much time in burocracy, paper, ecc. .
Anybody has already done it ? Could You help me ? I will be in Delhi next october, the 11th, and every help is welcome : shop, expedition office, etc. Thanks

Instead of buying in India, you might as well buy those in UK. I think there are some dealers up there. Not sure about Italy though!

Edit: Just found the following dealer in Italy too..

Thank Railway, for your ready answer, but the Enfield motorcicles sold in Italy are totally different from those you can find in India, not just because the price, of course.

You are correct haji, the 'export' models are somewhat different from the regular Indian models and it is difficult to give an easy answer to your questions. Before leaving Italy, you should make inquiries with both your 'customs' office (as regarding import requirements) and the office involved with 'licensing' a motorcycle in order that it can be legally driven in Italy. There may be issues with lights, emissions, brakes, the right-side gear change etc. I don't really know.

I checked this stuff out as far as importing a used Bullet to Canada some years back and the rules permitted an 'over 15 year old' bike to be imported without much problem, but a newer machine had to meet quite a few stringent requirements. I have heard of people finding a way to import recent model 500's to Europe for much less cost than the legally imported ones, but I don't know how much work/money is involved.

There are many motorcycle shops in the Karol Bagh district of Delhi -- some more reputable than others. (maybe a Delhi resident has some specific places to look) Another source of used Bullets is returning-home tourists....there are always a lot of bikes with 'for sale' signs on them in Goa (during the season) and I presume in Manali and the Kullu Valley. Paper work is a problem with these bikes if one is planning on exporting though.

On the Indian side, a shipping agent will probably be required to assist with the paper-work and shipping details, unless you are planning on riding back to europe in which case there is a whole other set of things to deal with (carnet, spares, visas etc).

I hope someone else can help with some first-hand experience -- in my case, I did purchase a 15 year old bike so I would have the option of bringing it home. After the non-stop mechanical hassles, I gave up on that idea after the first week, but maybe I was a bit too trusting as a buyer. I'll be more careful next time.

Hello Haji,
Welcome to the club of enfield Lovers.
The place to buy a good Enfiled is Delhi. Karol bagh is good try Laali sigh and madan Motors, they are easy to find as they are on Loney Planet. They offer buy out as weel as rental, however rental ends being exensive and you even more expensive if you desire to leave the bike on the way.
If you are thinking of buying an enfield and taking it back to your country, then please first study the norms of importing a motorcycle in your cpuntry first; especaily the emmission norms.
Most of the export models(sold only outside India) comply with rhe EU emmission norms, but you can buy one in India and classify it as an vintage and/or classic model to get an approval.
Anyway let me know when you are in Delhi and if need help.
All the best
Cheers
Vinay
PS: incase you need you can tell you are friend of Vinay from Delhi Royal Enflield Bullet Club.
If you are looking at touring the country then oth good for a buy, but for a short trip (I counsider Manali-leh a short one), its better to hire one from manali, there is a guy called Annu who does have good Enfields for Rent.

DEAR VINAYVERMA,
yes, I 'm a really Enfield lover and I was happy to realize, year by year that indian riders have rediscovered this great piece of their past and culture.
20 years ago, during my first trip in your country, just few Royal Enfiel could be seen, and young riders preferred Honda Hero or equivalent japanise motorbikes. Since last 6/7 years I have met more and more Enfield on the roads, in superb condition and carefully maintened.
You are perfectly right when you talk about our Limit Emission in Europe, but my mechanic is sure he can help.
I 'will let you know when I 'll be in Delhi, thanks.

Cool

Hi Haji,

I brought an Enfield 500 in Delhi four years ago from Ess Aar Motors. They sell a lot of bikes to overseas markets and are experienced with all the modifications required by different countries.

Ess Aar Motors
1-E/13, Jhandewalan Ext.,
New Delhi - 110 055
Telephone: 011 - 3678836 / 3524426
Mobile: 98107 97099
Contact Person:
Mr. Satish Kumar Garg

They can arrange shipping and all the paper work and bureaucracy, like filling in the ownership form with a local address if you want to ride it around in India first – and if you come back six months later they’ll still arrange the shipping and docs. I think it cost me a bit over Rs 10,000 to send mine to England, but I think the price varied a lot from port to port so check it out with Ess Aar and shop around.

They can also sell you a side-saddle spares kit which is useful on the road and at home. They’ve got a good garage for servicing, and can do modifications such as chroming and different style seats – but watch out for the cowboy style ones – they make you real saddle sore – I changed mine back after a week!

Here’s a shot of me in Goa last month with a bike I hired for a few days – hadn’t been on an Enfield for a while so it felt like hanging out with an old friend..
