Renting a motorbike?

Has anyone had any experience with renting a bike in Delhi or Rajasthan? Starting to think about my next trip and would like to spend some time riding on a bike but will only be over for 3-4 weeks so not really worth buying one.
Any info would be great - if anyone knows of motorcycle tour companies operating in India that info would also be great. The only ones I'm finding through google are either for Richie Rich (staying in Heritage hotels, etc) or super long, and I'd only want to do it for a couple of weeks max.

I know that there are a couple of motorbike rental places in Delhi listed the the India Lonely Planet. I can't remember their names off the top of my head.

Otherwise, apart from Pushkar I found it difficult to find people / places to hire motorbikes in Rajasthan. I definately tried in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur to no avail.

Good luck, because there is nothing like cruizing around the subcontinent on a two wheeler!

Hmm, even catching the train out to Pushkar and riding in a loop from there wouldn't be too bad - and I'd get to avoid that Delhi traffic- it would probably take a day for me to get out of town anyway!
I'll find the LP tonight and have a look though

Hi guerik,

You might have in mind which bike you want to rent? Karol Bagh is place where you should be looking for your stead, what I can suggest is that you strike a lump sum rent deal for a fixed period with the dealer, he will execute required papers and you can go hurrah down the road.

I don’t know really what paper work they will execute or how much rent they might ask, last I heard was going rate per day for those dodgy bullets was about 600 Rs a day. If it gets too complicated then lemme know your scheduled time I will have the battery charged and reinstalled on a standby nifty little 100 CC two stroke I have and she is pretty reliable, you can take her around.

I wouldn't mind paying for a good one but as I'm not mechanically inclined I'm worried about getting a "cheap deal" and then getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. Even though I've never encountered an empty road in my travels, sometimes they're not roads I'd like to be stuck on nevertheless.
Perhaps back to the train for me, and can rent a bike for some day tripping instead

I went to Karolbagh to find out these things just a few weeks back. If the period is for anything around 15 to 20 days, it probably costs same as buying one and selling it. That was my conclusion. The rent is something like 500. I found this guy Gurdial of whom I spoke well about. Vinay knows lots more. You probably don't need to worry about getting help here. You need to decide what kind of bike you want. If you drive a bullet and it gets punctured, it will be a very sorry situation for you hauling it around, I guess. But that is no reason to decide against it if you like its thump thump.

If you buy and sell a bullet, you will lose around 10k, no matter how small a period or what you do. If you know someone, then that is different. What some people do is, buy a bullet, park it with someone here and make 3 or 4 trips over two years and then sell it off.

I guess what you want is a smooth 4-stroke cruiser that is not too heavy or simply just go for the one and only Yamaha Rx100, the greatest bike in this side of the universe.

I have to Karol bagh again (hopefully) this week, as my speedometer has been lying with this guy for a month now. I will find out about rents of yamahas and some lighter 4-stroke bikes and update.

If you are not too keen on the photogenic classic.. old era looks.. Then a 4 stroke jap bike is the best option.. Very reliable.. like the Karizma, CBZ, Unicorn, pulsar. These bikes hav gud resale value too. The thing is in India u don't really need to carry too much luggage.. you can buy most things cheaply when neede. For the comfort factor the recently launched Avenger(cruiser style) is another good option.. Saddle bags are also available in India now.. like Cramsters which fit perfectly on these bikes..

Thumbs up Brand new bike

A brand new Bajaj Avenger [ cruiser styled bike is available for rs 64 K on the road in Delhi ] It will have a resale Value of around Rs 55k providing you don't have an accident. Net cost to you is rs 9000. If you bike around for say 20 days, it will be Rs 450 per day. The dealer whom you buy from will be the dealer whom you sell to at a pre-arranged re-sale price. Ihe mileage and reliabllity are much better than a bullet.... but the thump thump sound of bullet.... missing.

Here's an image: [old name was eliminator, new name is avenger, bike is same but they reduced price by 25000 rs two months back.

A Yamaha-Rx100 just doesn't give any problems. You can certainly rent an Rx-100 and take it around. You don't need to know anything technically. It will keep running and running on its own, as any Indian boy older than 13 will tell you. It has been the dream of every Indian for two decades and is a legend here for good reasons. Rx-135, would also do I guess.

Yup Yamaha has been the first love of many a bikers in India.. the 2 stroke roar and the ease with which it goes over any terrain.. is just amazing.. I started my serious ridin.. with this awesome piece of machinery.. too bad emission norms.. kinda choked this segment..

I feel the settlement loss with a new bike is going to much greater then old ones, just have to be smart enough to strike a good deal. I doubt its possible to push back the bajaj elim for about 9000 rs even in two weeks time.

Kaushik, Yamaha 135 just isn’t anywhere near RX100, it flopped mainly because the idiots at Yamaha India simply upped the CC from 100 to 135 without touching the transfer ports and never bothered to set right mix of MSV values, with result gunk continues to built up in small end and transfers get chocked in half the time then a RX100, nothing is ok with combustion of 135.

Oh well, guerik aint riding anymore I shd stop chewing the cud now.

rx is not a good bike to cruise ..........it is not at all comfortable to ride long distances in rx........

bullet is the best bike to travel....... avenger is good but no way better than bullet....

u can also try ur hand in a second hand pulsar ,and sell it afterwards.......but it will take some time.......pulsar is a very efficient bike

Fact is the newer engine is much better in both fuel efficiency and power. I was not replying to a techie discussion, but to a traveller who wishes to feel the wind thru the hair, so to speak. I actually wrote that particular line cuz I couldn't find a pic of avenger. Found pic of eliminator; and had to give some expln while posting the info on a lookalike bike NOT titled avenger.

In any case, my "wrong info" still gives you a better bike. I would buy this avenger today, currently my first choice for bikes.

Aahhhhhh....You brought back good memories. Driving my RX-100 on Palolem beach in 1989-1990. Vast expanses of virgin sand with no shacks, no tourists and no stray dogs! Just a few hippies staying in make shift tents! In those days you could ride your bike on the sand at the edge of the water line. Not any longer.
The Rx-135 is not as good a bike in my opinion. Also rented the Yamaha Enticer earlier this year and I found this bike to be a big disappointment. Looks nice but it has no muscle whatsoever.
