rent or buy a car

I am planning on spending several months in Kerala and would like to have a car available. I prefer to drive myself so I do not need a driver. I have looked at regular car rentals and they are outlandish (much more than getting a car with driver). So I am interested in a cheap rental or possibly buying a reliable car. Any advice is appreciated. I have visited the area so I am aware of the driving.

If you're thinking of buying a used car, I'd recommend Maruti's True Value service. It's like those certified used cars they sell in the states. I know a couple of people who bought their cars through this service and a year later both are pretty happy how they turned out.

The major rental companies I found charge around $60/day. No kidding. So 15000rps a month sounds like a good price. What about insurance? Can you give me any information such as an agency name, email, etc? I have a U.S. license, do you know if that is good enough or do I need an international one too? We are planning on renting in Cochin or Ernakulam so is there an agency near there?

after i came to delhi, i drove for a month with my US license..I got the in'l license from AAA...meanwhile I got the Indian license done...also, buy a car instead of renting...maybe a Maruti Zen...good car!
