I've been driving the roads of Pune for the best part of a year now, and generally know what to expect when I venture out. Today was nuttier than usual.
The first incident was with a girl on a scooter. I was turning left from a dual carriageway onto a side road. She was turning right from the side road, but wanted to join the carriageway containing oncoming traffic. I expect madness at junctions so came to a comfortable halt. She didn't stop so cleanly and gave me a glare for having the temerity to be on the road. No contact, just another day in Pune. The second incident was more exciting. I was travelling down a road where another road merges in from the left (my right of way for what that's worth in India). I was following a bike quite slowly and tavelling in a straight line. Then a scooter from the left just drove straight into the side of my car. They weren't going too fast either as the scooter stayed upright. Indeed it was still in a fit enough state for them to follow me with much shouting and fist shaking. How do you drive into the side of a car, and think the car driver is to blame? ![]() |

You are meant to shout back (incoherently but harshly, or whatever suites you) and wave your own fists, all the while looking appropriately menacing. Even arguing inventively helps. And don’t forget to throw in a few sympathetic and understanding smiles towards others (passing by or watching) who may support you.
All a part of the complete traffic experience. |
