Important to know: do you want to sell it later in Delhi, or elsewhere?

If you aren't buying it for export you'll need residency papers.

Husband (who sells bikes for a living) says you need:
- the original papers of the bike - TTO set to be signed by the previous owner or form no. 28, 29 and 30 to be all signed by the previous owner - if you want to sell it not in Delhi but elsewhere you have to get the NOC (no objection certificate) of that city - if you want to transfer the bike onto your own name you also need residential papers (proof of address). But you don't need to do that. You can keep it on the previous owner's name. |

Thank You very much for your answers.
I want to sell the bike probably in Mumbai, but i don't know yet. How does it work with the NOC ? What is the TTO ? Another question. The Insurance. I'll probably be using the bike for no more than 2 months. Could you tell me how does it work? (i don't want to go through much hassle nor spend much money) Do i need to get any papper from the seller about the insurance? (i think i read something about this in another thread in this same forum, but i don't remember) Thank you very much again. Lebowski |

My husband says
- when you buy the bike in Delhi go with the seller to the RTO and get an NOC for Bombay. But if you don't know where you will be selling it ask the RTO people if they can give you an NOC for anywhere in India (husband is not sure if they will do that). If that is not possible, the buyer in Bombay will have to go to Delhi and get an NOC for Bombay in Delhi, which is why people don't usually like buying bikes from other States, and will try to lower the asking price because of that. - TTO is transferring of the registration of the bike. There will be the first owner's name and signature and the bike number. Don't put your own name, and when you sell it the buyer will put his name. (It's not worth the hassle for you to have it in your own name since you only stay for 2 months.) - When you buy the bike take a xerox copy of the owner's driving license. - If the first owner does not have an insurance on this bike, make a third partie insurance in Delhi at any insurance company, for example New India Insurance or Oriental Insurance Co of India. If he has a valid insurance there is no need because the bike is insured, not the driver. Take those papers from him with you. When are you coming to India? If you want I can send you our phone number with pm and you can call my husband when you are in Bombay and have more questions - we are close by in Pune. It's easier to explain these things by phone. |

Thank you very much for all this useful information.
Right now i'm in Delhi, and probably tomorrow or the day after i'll be going to Karol Bagh to buy the bike. Do you think they will have a xerox copy of the owner's driving licence and the rest of the pappers at the second hand shop ? Another question. What means RTO?. If i get a NOC for Bombay and then i want to sell it in another state, can i get a new NOC in Bombay for the state i want? Thanx again! Lebowski |

They should have all the papers at the shop. You have to demand them, say otherwise you won't buy, then they will get them for you.
Also take a delivery note from the shop, saying that this shop sold the bike to you. Basically, a receipt with the shop name and address etc. RTO = Regional Transport Office. At the shop they will know where it is located. They should do all the paper work for you or with you at least included in the pay for the bike (no extra). Quote:
Good luck, with all this basic knowledge you should be able to get the papers you need. At least you know what the people are talking about! ![]() Don't hesitate to ask me again. |

Thank you very much, you "saved my life" with all of this info. All of this that was troubling my mind for the last few days.
By the way, could you tell me which bike would be easier to sell in Bombay, the Yamaha Enticer or the Bajaj Avenger? (maybe you know, since you live in that state). I still haven't decided which one to buy, one of those for sure, since i'm not a very experienced with bikes and those are easy to drive and confortable. Thankx again !! Lebowski |

You're quite welcome!
He thinks the Bajaj will be easier to maintain as well as to sell. |

Hello. I'm new to the forum, motorcycles and India, and I'm planning on combining the lot when I travel this October. I'm trying to decide whether long-term (two to two and a half months) rental or short-term purchase is the way to go. I'll be buying in the south (Mysore, Goa, or Kerala) and selling in the north (likely Delhi) if I do decide to buy, though this sounds difficult with the state to state restrictions/red tape. Otherwise I'll rent south and (hopefully, if possible) leave the bike in Delhi. What are the possibilities, impossibilities, costs and benefits of any of these options? Could someone bring some light to my darkness? Thanks in advance.

We once had a customer who rented an Enfield from us and went on a trip to the North. In the end he sent the bike back by train from Delhi to us (Pune). I don't know the costs though, can find out more info if you want. I don't think anyone who rents a bike to you will want it you to simply leave in another city.

Let me buy for you
I myself was thinking about buying a nice little Enfield, but the cost of a new one was too prohibitive. You can buy in my name, I will pay the amount you think I should and you can clock some miles for 2-3 months. I will provide the residency papers and all that.
Let me know if you think it will work for you. - Biswajit |
