Thanks for contributing, as an ardent bus traveler it has my interest
(& hail still to 2Cents for ever starting this thread.) I still prefer to just ask around on the ground though, but should be helpful to many. (Had some experiences on my last trip, notably in western MP, to almost put me off of Indian bus travel for good btw -- but had to later reconsider my views.)So keep adding, folks! (but kindly check what links have been provided before if you do).

Just reading your post Mach - I am much the same as you. With my bus dealings before I got my car, I used to find you could book in the morning of the day you were going if bus departed late afternoon, or the day before, at government bus stand, or with a private bus agent, and you would get a reasonable seat/berth. I believe it is still much the same. I have noticed in many of these online sites that smaller places are not included. A while back I checked if they had Jaisalmer on them, and they didn't. Only major city routes mainly.
Like you re buses - my very first trip years ago was along the Konkan coast line - what a revelation! To avoid heart attacks as the driver played chicken all the way as to who was going to give way first, I concentrated on looking out the window at the view. Having done that Jodhpur - Jaisalmer trip by bus many times, because of much less traffic on the road, I became more nonchalent about them. On the whole, I have concluded they are okay!
