hey ppl,
i just bought a bike, 1995 roadking to ride... i'm planning on riding it from tamil nadu to the himalayas- himachal, uttaranchal and leh..
since this is my first long distance ride ,i was wondering if any fellow im'ers who have ridden in the himalayas would help me prepare a check list of essential things that i should carry on the trip...i'll probably be going for 4 to 6 weeks in july, so any advice on roads, weather wud be much appreciated...

useful links

hash, i am sorry you haven't got many replies, they are all just envious (as I am).

i remember biking was discussed before and there is a place to start

(there indiawise mentions the toolkit that is adviseable to carry)

again, i am extremely envious (even though i have never riden a bike before) as i love freedom that driving your own vehicle gives you...

Yeah I hear that V_V
unfortunately the question lies beyond my field of experience especially the bit in the mountains.
So based on my very limited trips on a bike I'll do me best!
1. First, like you probably already know? Riding at night is a nightmare not to be considered. The sight of a overladen Tata with no lights hurtling towards you will quickly convince you of this!
2. Even as the light fades if you aint wearing a full face helmet or goggles/sunglasses the bike headlight will attract a lot of bugs both big and small!
Man they hurt
3 If you've time take the side roads it makes for a saner person at supper.
4. Any mechanical problem can be overcome in India if not in situ then someone knows a guy 30 kms away, who's cousin brother owns a shop that deals (partly) in exactly the stuff your looking for!
5. My old boring stance of take it easy, though I think you know how to do that hash!!
I think the maximum distance I've ridden in day is about 110 KMs and I slept well that night. Which is nothing.
No doubt you get used to long days on the bike but tiredness can mess you up on the unpredictable highways of India!!
6. The rest you know hash, tread lightly and there is always a solution in India (a bit of cash helps!)

PS People like Indyboy can be a great help here!!!
Or the Enfield club Delhi??

Sounds like fun, Hash. The high mountain part way beyond my experience and I'm hoping vinayverma will be by and see your post as he has done this kind of riding with his club. There are a few touring yarns on the royal enfield site as well -- one of which, 'Ride of a Lifetime', is by Nicolitta D'penha who was a female member of a group biking to the Indo-China border -- her story is here:

http://royalenfield.com/NewsDetails.... e=currentnews

one of vinay's touring photos is in the gallery:

you could drop a pm to vinay and Indyboy if they don't see your message here as I'm sure they would have some useful advice.

Yezdi an interesting choice of bike -- rugged and reliable, Yezdis and their Czech Jawa siblings have an international following almost as rabid as Enfield!
