The only draw back seems to be safety, but then again, that's the problem with every car in India.

meander, We can not wish away congestion, pollution or parking Space problem....Nano hasn't created all this....no doubt it will add to all this...but so will the other vehicles.....

Let's see the human angle, Aishah has already said, it will be safer than bikes and scooters....

It's a human tendency we dont want others to come up to us....when we buyt a big car it's OK, when our neighbours' do it...we start Parking Problem....Pollution...Energy Conservation....

All hybrid cars are too costly and their reliability is little low...

We had Reva, an electrical vehicle...did people buy it ? No not many....

People will buy what they want....not what you or me want........

The keyword is "Relative Safety" here. Its supposed to put people from 2-wheelers into the car, a family of 4 on a 2-wheeler would anyday be safer in a four-wheeler.

And secondly, the car is hardly on the road and how do we know its not safe.

I was reading somewhere and there are this lady worried that this car has plastic bumpers and hence its not safe.

The point is that Nano [ and similar upcoming models from Bajaj etc] have the potential to add millions of cars to our already stretched infrastructure, roads and polluted air.

I am talking about the direction the automobile industry will take on Nano's success. Every me-too car manufacturer will come out with it's own Nano variant.

Nobody is blaming Tatas for creating the mess, but definitely Nano has the potential to substantially add to it and also to divert the focus of the auto industry away from green initiatives.

-The Thickness (or thinness in this case) of the doors
-Airbags (lack of)
-Crash tests

A car doesn't necessarily have to "come out" on the road for us to know the safetyness of a car.

But I do get your point about substituting two wheelers for this Nano, and I suppose it is relatively safer in some cases.

Personally? I think it's a great little car, and I have to congratulate TATA on this, but my worries are like many others in this thread, pollution, poor infrastructure, and safety as more car will be on road, more accidents. India has one of World's highest accident rates. 10% of World's fatal accidents happens in India, with only 1% of World's Cars. India has to adopt a more stringent driving licensing regulations so that people learn how to respect roads and driving laws.

Nano, It'll be very popular and TATA's talks of taking Nano to African countries, it's a great news for Indian Car industry.

Reva, or G-Wiz as it's known here, it's real ugly little number, but they have been very popular in the UK and in Europe. Specially in London as electric cars are exempt from congestion charge. TATA are saying that they hope to bring Nano to Europe within next two years, well who knows, they may even think of introducing an Electric version that will be very popular in Europe.

Nobody in India was on green initiative....And it's not a chinese plastic toy that anybody can become a me too producer....

Even Bajaj has also said, they are not competing with nano.....

See the upside potential...may be we can export millions....

I have been here for about 3 months now (Gurgaon) and have not had the courage to drive yet. My driver is working way, way overtime, bless his soul.

I did drive a short distance, 3 times now, but it was in totally off-peak times. The Indian roads are truly a menace and I am estimating it will take me another 6 months to feel confident about driving in 'normal' Indian traffic. Hopefully.

The Nano, in my judgement, is a great thing. How can we blame a car company for the deficiencies created by poor governance? TATA is not responsible for building safer roads and enforcing better driving habits, FGS!

How many things would not have been invented/created if companies waited for perfect societal conditions to introduce them?

Lol. Its kind of stupid to compare Reva with Nano.

reva takes 7 hours to fully charge and you can drive for '80 kilometers' after that. Top speed is 65 kmph and is as good as a 2-seater. I might as well buy a motor bike than buy a reva.

That exactly is my point, poor roads and governanace. Improving and laying out thousands of kilometres of new roads is not the solution, never will be. This is a country of 1.1bln people and no matter how much new and improved infratsructure you add, you are always fighting a lost cause.

Pouring billions and improving the public transport system, coupled with improving and adding new infrastructure is the only solution.

As I had said earlier, we can revisit the idea of private car ownerships in India once we come up with a technology safe and capable enough to put cars in the air.
