Mumbai to Goa on MotorBike

Hi everybody,
i am planning to go to goa from mumbai on my motorbike this weekend. this is my first time both in mumbai and goa. i would appreciate it very much if somebody help me out on the route i should be taking. i heard this route from mumbai to goa is very scenic.
i searched online and came across this link
http://www.premjis.com/tourism/mumbaigoa.htm

it talks about a direct route and a scenic route.
which one is recommended.

thanks in advance.

Hi,

If you are not pressed for time and really want to enjoy the ride with plenty of stopovers then you should choose the Scenic road. The route is obviously very beautiful, with minimum traffic (lookout for the devilish ST buses though, they come out of blind corners with breakneck speed!). You will be able to interact with lot of locals, eat local foods, and sample their lifestyle.
However, the route mentioned in the website is bit outdated, you don't need to go back to NH17 every time. I suggest

Mumbai
Panvel (Nh17)
Vadkhla Naka (Go Straight)
Alibaug
Revadanda
Murud-Janjira
Agardanda (Catch Ferry to Dighi)You may have to wait 1-2 hours, else can hire for private ferry Rs.150-200
Dighi
Shrivardhan
Harihareshwar (Catch Ferry for Bankot) Same rules as above
Bankot
Kelshi
Harnai
Dapoli
Dabhol (Catch Ferry for Veldur or Dhopave) Ferry every half an hour from 06:00 to 20:30, Pvt trips possible after that.
Guhagar(Take right from Tali, through Rai-Bhatgaon Bridge, it will save about 75 kms)
Ganpatipule - Jaigad
Ratnagiri
Come back to NH17
When you crossover to Sindhudurg district keep a lookout for right turn to Devgad at Nandgaon Junction
Devgad
Malvan - Sindhudurg-Tarkarli
Vengurla
Terekol (Catch Ferry for Arambol, Goa)
Arambol
Anjuna
Calangute
Maupsa
Panaji

Mostly you will be taking Maharashtra State Highway MSH-04 for the journey. You can checkout their excellent maps at http://www.mahapwd.com/gismaps/default.htm

Here is contact nos. of port offices, they can help you with ferry availability and timings.
Port Office
Bankot 952350 22050
Dapoli 952358 282479
Dabhol 952358 288358
Shrivardhan 952147 222235
Ratnagiri 952352 222160
Murud 952141 222746
Mora 9522 25328445
Bandra 9522 26490873

Hope this helps
And pls share your journey with us at Indiamike

As per the info I have presnetly only Dabhol-Dhopave and Terekol-Arambol has the facility for carrying four wheelers.
However, as Konkan region is developing very fast nowdays, new Ferry services might have started on other sections.
The Port Offices will have more accurate and up to date information on that.

How long will it take to go direct to Goa on a motorbike from Mumbai.

I would travel at the optimum time to ensure clear roads and speedy route.

How is Highway 17? Is it a typical Indian Highway or can I assume its a rolling smooth cruising road?

There is another option to Goa, it is slightly longer but the roads are far better. You take the express way to Pune and onwards on Kolapur from there to Goa after taking a right. Details are sketchy to me but am sure someone will be able to post a detailed route on IM.

Mumbai-Pune-Kolhapur-Belgaum-Amboli Ghat-Sawantwadi-Goa

However, the NH17 from Panvel to Goa is recommended for its unmatched scenary of Konkan. The road is in good shape for most of the part.

The journey could be completed comfortably in two days with a possible stopover at Chiplun/Ratnagiri.

NH17 is more seinic, twisty, curvy and with that comes share of blind corners, overtaking trucks etc. Road itself is decent.

The Pune Expressway route is much more sterile, faster and definitely safer...It is a 4 laner and then a 2 laner divided road. The route is mumbai-pune-kolhapur-right turn at nipani (near kauvery hotel) (you dont need to go to belgaum) and then through Ajra, Amboli Ghat, Sawantwadi...where it joins the main NH17.

In a car driving fast it takes 10 hours odd...On a bike probably 12. If you take NH17 you can stay overnight in a town on the way.

both ways..!!

I hv been to goa by both routes..in the present weather, the konkan region is not as exciting as monsoon times..and it becomes very hot during the day..
the kolhapur route is real good road..excellent road rather..instead of turning from nea kauvery hotel, go ahead and take a turn from below the flyover (around 15km ahead of kauvery hotel)..the road near kauvery hotel is in real bad shape and not worth tryin..the other road is very good and a pleasure to drive..

Night Driving

Guys can anybody please suggest which route should I take if I am driving at night i.e. in terms of traffic, visibility etc.
The old Bombay - Goa route or the one which passes thru Pune Expressway & Kolhapur. Please assist. Thanks.
