Mumbai - Mahabaleshwar buses

Has anyone info. about the buses on this route.

Any hotel or other accomodation tips for Mahabaleshwar would also be useful.

Someone on the thorn tree (I think) posted the following about Mahabaleshwar quite a while ago, I saved it as I thought it was interesting.

If you go to the tableland in Panchgani there is an unusual restaurant called Den Diner in a cave which serves snacks and cold drinks. The manager of this restaurant has the keys to another empty cave a little distance away. You might persuade him, as I did, to let you stay in the empty cave if you want, but be warned.

There are no facilities whatsoever. It is just an empty cave.

You need to carry everything from bedding to food and water and lighting. But it is quite safe since you can lock yourself in and it can be quite an unusual experience to stay in a cave which is probably eons old. It won't hurt to first take a look before you decide. You can always fetch your things later.

here's some info from the '01 LP South India guide: there are two daily MTDC luxury buses leaving at 6:30am and 11pm from their reservation office on Madame Cama Rd in Mumbai (230rp 7 hours) and the book also mentions that there are four daily buses to Mumbai Central train station from Mahabaleshwar (120rp 10 hours) so I'd assume there are 4 going the other way as well, but no times are given.

You could find a lot of different timing and seating options for buses from Mumbai and Pune to Mahabaleshwar on online bus ticket booking services like ticketvala.com, abhibus and rajtravels. There may be more of these services, these are the ones we've used.
