Mountain Biking

My fav sport is MtBing! I love it and I have walked on pathes I'd die to ride on in India:-)
I had a look at the big cycle brands in india. The best bike the make is like a 14kg alivio one:-(
They have to import cycles from Taiwan, Thailand one so on, which makes it very expensive, because of the high taxes
Which is blody stupid, caus MtB is the best sport there is, innit? In Pune someone opened one shop, the 1st one in town, a couple of month ago. I had a look and a chat with the owner who seems to be a great guy. He told me about a bunch of freaks in town with like real cool enduro machines:-) They allegedly do jumping and downhill racing, which surprised me. There are competitions in the country and twice I had seen decent bikes in India. Once in rishikesh, owned by an american, a lovely trek and 2nd time was in Pondy, where a fit guy manouvred his baby through crazy traffic with great elegance and speed(i got jeallous:-)) But apart from this I have seen naffin at all! Such abif country, such amazing trails and only these Hercules and Hero cripples Well, India is developping quickly and some changes will be for the better, so I am looking forward to see some jewels on the roads and trails!

Mountain Biking, crvlvr.

And, yeah, I have a feeling the reason it hasn't caught on yet is that India is still too full of genuine near-death experiences for the controlled kind to be attractive enough to shell out thousands on gear...

Why pay megabucks for a swank mountainbiking kit when I can just take another cycle rickshaw ride over that crazy bridge in Agra for about 30 rupees?

Rememba, there are the Himalayas. You know these big massive mountains in the north, with bad roads, lots of passes and remote pilgrim places and too
narrow paths that cry for a MtB. But obviously you are ignoranuses. So its a 1st a tourist thing jet to be discovered
and also for the locals it could be great. In Thailand you can get a decent bike for 11000 Thaibath, so we are not talking megabucks. And in India they can make it for estimated 9000 Roopees!

9000 rupees is A LOT of money for most Indians.

It's 9000 times as expensive as navigating a New Delhi traffic circle on foot (free!), for instance.

Oh jeah, it is lot of money, but good things cost some money, even in India. And India is a rich country, so no worries!
You can of course walk in circles all day long in Delhi and get your lungs full of dust, while I will be ridin the himalayas on a 1Lakh bike!

Yeah, see, that's the thing.

India is a lot more worried about the 1 Lakh car than the 1 Lakh bicycle.

Of course, they are waiting eagerly to spend hours in totally
trafficjammed cities in a Tata packed with at least 7 people, 2 dogs, a couple of hens and some beggars around... The will have to biuld 3 stories highways to keep all the Nanos runnning and when every family will have its own car, petrol will run out and cows will carry the vehicles. But the Indians will com up with a handy solution, I am shure!

MTB stands for Motor Torpedo Boat.

There are enough idiots on two wheels on the roads of India without adding Martin to them.

Yes, it is expensive and many in city like me feel investment in this a wasted investment (I own an old Peugeot with Shimono gears) but I've only used it in delhi that too only for 1 year) not if I have to ride a MTB in Manali, Spiti, etc. I just rent one from some of the advneture tourism guys.
BTW I recently saw Firefox brand of bikes in some stores wich are expensive than the normal ones and are supposed to be MTBs.

Mountain biking and biking are definitely catching on over here now. Nowadays there are more options besides Hercules and Hero available in the market. Firefox is quite a nice brand and they have quite a few models including some double suspension ones . You can check out their site http://www.firefoxbikes.com/ to see the closest showroom near your area. I owned a Viper and was pretty impressed by it. Also there is a Raleigh showroom in Mumbai and they have some decently priced models available there.
