First and foremost the original registration papers, next any insurance documents and pollution certificates, tax payment documents. Form 29 Notice of transfer of ownership, signed by the original owner. Also a Delivery Receipt in some form or other. Download this from form-29.pdf

Now if you are lucky enough to get all of this, then you are doing well, mainly because it helps when you come to sell it again or your have a traffic inspection for some reason.

In most cases you will just get the original registration papers and please ensure that it is original and the frame and engine numbers match the registration documents. A sales receipt is also essential and does not require much of a format. Still great to have the original owners signature.

Mira, are you sure that a non-resident can register a vehicle?

All you require is a proof of residence, that is a bank account showing an address, lease agreement.

this is all that I used when i bought my new 500cc bike and registered it my name, it was very simple and had insurance as well.

Having a lease agreement means that you are a resident, so all of the normal doors are open to you.

Try here, you can both rent and buy off Sunny. I rented 4 bikes recently and found them very good and helpful.

http://www.sonimotors.com/

The rental and deposit is good aswell.

We had 4 bikes, 3 with electric start, 1 without (all good starters)
Front disc brake, rear drum brake.
Bikes were fitted with loud horns, (required to show/sound presence)
Front crash bars
Luggage racks (loads of space)
Box of spares (tubes, cables, foot pump, bulbs, nuts and bolts, levers, springs, clips and much more)
Spare keys.
Bike documents.
Insurance.
Pollution certificate

Yes well, my answer was for anyone, resident or non resident, the papers are the same if you want it registered in your own name.

I sell bikes to many foreigners, can I say this our shall I be .......... So moving along; the documents are really the same, if you don't want to register it and if you wont be here long don't bother. So long as you hold the original registration certificate, have a bill of sale giving all of the details your are 'generally fine'. Sometimes if you have paid up insurances, taxes and a pollution certificate you are sweet, Having a signed Form 29 and smell the roses, very easy to sell the bike at a higher price. Most travelers, experienced and otherwise are aware that papers for bikes for foreigners traveling are not a big deal as usually we are not hassled so long as you have a license and the registration docs, a challan of Rs 500/- will be the most you will get for no insurance etc.

What is a Non-Resident, what is a Resident. How long do you have to be here before you can be considered a resident.

What is proof of residence Nick, for me it was a lease agreement, all signed, stamped and duly certified. The bank statement from the HDFC, a copy of my passport and visa and a photograph or two. This was all that I had to produce to get a bike registered in my name. An added document would be your FRRO papers but sometimes we buy bikes before we need to go to the FRRO.

I know people that arrive here, get an apartment and have a lease agreement all sorted within the first 2 weeks of arriving, stay here 3 months and then go off somewhere. They have there proof of residence and then can do whatever they like. Get a PAN card or drivers license and you are essentially classified as an Indian for entry into all places at Indian prices.
