Motorbike trip from Delhi or Mumbai - Recommendations?

Hi all

I am flying in to India on the 19th December this year, and want to drive a motorbike somewhere!

It will be my first time in India, so I have no idea as to where to go. I would like to get a bit off the beaten track, but I will be travelling alone (might just meet a friend on the way, who will ride on the back), so it would also be nice to be able to stop some palces where one can meet some other travellers. Preferably just not the "main" tourist attractions - I have absolutely no need to see the Taj Mahal and that sort and also prefer to keep away from the big cities.

So I am looking for a scenic ride out in the countryside/mountains with some great, preferably more rural stops along the way. I have about 2 weeks, perhaps 3 at a stretch, and I guess I would prefer to drive about every second day. I can fly into either Delhi or Mumbai, and there is no need for me to get back to my starting point, except if I have to return a rental bike (as opposed to buying).

So my questions are:
Any reccomendations as to routes from Delhi / Mumbai?
What bike should I rent?
Any specific places one should rent or buy a bike?
Any other advice or tips?

It is easier to rent a bike in Delhi at a good rate.

It is your choice in where you want to ride. India is great in every direction.

It is extremely easy to 'wing it'.

I went north Manali - Leh etc, this is not so good at this time of the year. South is probably better.

I opted for an ENFIELD 500cc
