Am arriving at Mangalore by train with a female friend and would like to know a few things: 1. Where to go (name of the area) from Railway station to take any decent bus to Udupi (Udupi trains do not match incoming train timings, so trains are ruled out). 2. Where do I get down while on train, MAJN or MAQ? 3. How do I travel from station to bus stand... auto, bus, what would be the fare like? 4. We are two foreigners and I'm concerned about the politicians who beat up girls for apparently no reasons, (what I heard and saw in papers). Is it safe for me and my friend? 5, How much will it cost for a bus trip from MAQ to Udupi? And how will the rush be on a Monday morning (9 am)?

1. Hapangatta , After you get down ask for private bus busstop to udupi. You could walk. 2. MAQ 3. Was is good. If you have luggage you could take a auto for min charge. 4. Yup, ofcource its safe. People just dont find forigners or girls to beetup. take things in the right sprint, dont worry. 5. There would be many regular commuters taking the bus at this time and therefore it would be in peak capacity , but none the less you would not find it a problem I suppose. Also there are plenty of buses. Dont remember the exact cost , but should eb less than Rs100. Other option would be to go to the KSRTC Bus stop or take the KSRTC bus's (State road transport) You say "We are two foreigners and I'm concerned about" and your username contains a Indian name (Anita). if you are a NRI or a person of Indian origin in the boston, etc rest be assured you will feel at home here.

Srikanth has provided accurate info. I just want to add, take the auto from the station to the bus terminal. The roads in India are not conducive to wheeled luggage. Buses run every 30 mins or so. Plenty of Private buses. Although they can get crowded in the mornings and evenings but by 9am, the crowds would begin to thin out. Given the universitiis in an around Mangalore atract foreign students, you won't stick out as tourists. The incident you site about women ina pub being abused by a fundamentalist group is a rare occasion. However, do take note and single women try to behave conservatively. Why Udipi?

thanks thanks folks. @ Srikanth, Anita, btw, is a Universal name :-) but I know that I share this name with many Indians. Where is Hapangatta? First is MAJN and then MAQ. So where do I get down to go to Hapangatta? @ crvlvr, A friend of ours has invited us to Udupi for a vacation.

MAQ would be more appropriate and easy for you, Ans was with that respect. The point crlvr made is of imp, with many non-indians in many of the institutions in and around mangalore you wouldnt be out of the crowd much. | |

MAQ is the last station on the route. Trains will have to turn around at MAQ. If you get off at MAJN, it is a longer haul to the bu stand. Here is a map. http://indiarailinfo.com/station/map/2931 Hampangatta is a location within the Managlore City where the bustand is located. It is centered on the map link below. You'll see the station to the south of Hampankatta http://wikimapia.org/#lat=12.8680373...16&l=0&m=s&v=9
