Looking for hybrid bicycles + luggage system (Delhi)
Looking for hybrid bicycles + luggage system (Delhi)
Hello,
intro
First a short introduction: we are Mark & Mirte from the Netherlands. We are on a trip around the world. The last 9 months we've traveled on a motorcycle through South-America and Africa. Now we are in Delhi and want to buy a bicycle to travel up to Ladakh.
the bicycles
We are looking for two hybrid bicycles. At the Jhandewalan Cycle Market in Delhi we've found two bikes which we can use. The Hercules Ryders ACT110 (hybrid, 21 gears, no shocks) and a Mongoose Crossway 250 (hybrid, 21 gears, front shock with lockout). The ACT110 is Rs 11.900, the Mongoose is Rs 17.400 (The ACT is too small for me).
luggage
Lets assume that we buy the beforementioned bikes. Now we still have to take our luggage. Back home I use a single wheel bicycle trailer which I like very much (Bob Yak). But I think it's not possible to find anything like this in Delhi. So we need a luggage rack and panniers. The only thing I've found so far is the luggage rack on the Decathlon website and on Ebay (very expensive).
The panniers from Decathlon are only 15L each which is to small.
Does one of you know where in Delhi to find:
-a luggage rack
-and 20L-25L panniers?
other bike markets?
I think the Decathlon in Bangalore has a better choice of bikes, but Bangalore is just too far away from Delhi. Are there other bike shops/markets in Delhi which we should visit to find good bikes & luggage systems?
thanx in advance

Contact /post on Pedalyatri.in and Bikeszone.com/forum. Pedalyatri is a cycling group from Delhi/Gurgaon and Bikeszone is a cyclists forum focussed on India. Plenty of members on both have done Leh/Ladakh and will be able to give advice.
The bikes selected above in my opinion are not a good choice and may not last the rough terrian/be extremely difficult to get by on/repair.

Thanx!
I've posted my questions on bikeszone.com.
I know the quality of the bikes. But we are no a tight budget. The bikes are simple, but I think they can manage.
As said we've traveled South-America by motorcycle (two up on a Bajaj Pulsar 180cc up to an altitude of 5020m) and Africa (Kawasaki KLR 650). We are good roadside mechanics (I'm a bicycle mechanic by hobby).
I found that there are also some bicycle shops at Lajpat Nagar II, delhi. So I think we'll visit them tomorrow.

Update:
We've visited a few shops in Delhi, here a short review:
-jandelahwan cycle market: for us to much of a local market with low quality bikes. The market is ok if you just need a bike for Delhi.
-track&trail Lajpat Nagar: quite big shop, nice&helpful, not so many accecoiries (and those available are expensive).
-firefox Lajpat Nagar: mainly Trek cycles, not so many accecoiries (more affordable then T&T). Trek bikes are good, but expensive.
-merida Lajpat Nagar: closed. Now in Ghitorni.
-BSA/Hercules, vikas marg: only city/MTB, no hybrids, no accecoiries.
-Rajesh Noida sector 9: big shop with many bikes, not so many hybrids though, but lots of accecoiries.
-Rajesh Ghitorni: no doubt about it. This is the best shop in Delhi. Lots of bikes, lots of affordable accecories. Capable mechanic.
-Merida Ghitorni: mainly MTB. According to the guy we spoke there they are expanding and will have a lot in stock in a few weeks time.
-adventurepoint Defense Colony: we visitied this outdoor shop because we needed panniers. They have them, but very expensive.
Yes, we visited many shops. But bought averything at Rajesh in Ghitorni. We ended up with a Schwinn Searcher Comp women's and a Schwinn Searcher men. Nice hybrids with good&modern components.
My advise for anyone who is looking for a hybrid would be to visit Rajesh. Anyone who needs accecoiries, go to Rajesh. When you just need a MTB, you can go anywhere.
