You can just book it in Kullu, no need to pre-book in my opinion.

2 hours minimum.

It is a better idea. For Rohtang one should start early from Manali. In afternoon it gets crowded and it becomes difficult to get a parking space, you need to walk more. When we were in Manali, we started around 4 am from Manali to get there early.

4. How long is the total drive if I wanted to go from Kullu to Rohtang Pass, without spending a night in Manali first?

Around 5-6 hours or may be more, not actually advisable. If you start from Manali early, you can save at least a couple of hours.

Thank you for your response. Do you recommend going from Kullu to Manali at night? We want to stay in Kullu for as long as possible to see the Dussehra Festival on October 6. Thanks!

Night travel from Kullu to Manali should not be a problem since there are night buses from Shimla to Manali via Kullu, but it will be cold. So I guess you ought to be prepared accordingly :D

Nope, I had never been in Kullu during the Dussera, but I have read (and heard) that the main festivity takes place in Kullu, since it is famous for its temples. So expect a lot of 'religious' (or not) crowd in Kullu :D

Well, we did Shimla to Manali and we did not stop at Kullu. I have to check if I still have the number with me. If I happen to find it out, I will PM it to you but I doubt if it will be of any help since the driver was from Shimla.
