Kullu/Manali/Rohtang Pass

Hi!

I am flying into Kullu morning of Thursday October 6th (to see the big festival there). On Friday, I would like to go to the Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley, if time permits. I have the following questions..any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Do I have to book a car/driver in advance to go from Kullu to Manali? Or can I just hire a taxi in Kullu?
2. What is the driving time between Kullu & Manali (distance 40 km)?
3. If I want to go to Rohtang Pass on Friday, should I go from Kullu to Manali on Thursday night, and then depart from Manali early Friday morning?
4. How long is the total drive if I wanted to go from Kullu to Rohtang Pass, without spending a night in Manali first?

Thanks so much!!!

You can just book it in Kullu, no need to pre-book in my opinion.

2. What is the driving time between Kullu & Manali (distance 40 km)?

2 hours minimum.

3. If I want to go to Rohtang Pass on Friday, should I go from Kullu to Manali on Thursday night, and then depart from Manali early Friday morning?

It is a better idea. For Rohtang one should start early from Manali. In afternoon it gets crowded and it becomes difficult to get a parking space, you need to walk more. When we were in Manali, we started around 4 am from Manali to get there early.

4. How long is the total drive if I wanted to go from Kullu to Rohtang Pass, without spending a night in Manali first?

Around 5-6 hours or may be more, not actually advisable. If you start from Manali early, you can save at least a couple of hours.

Thanks so much!!!

Hope you find these useful.

Thank you for your response. Do you recommend going from Kullu to Manali at night? We want to stay in Kullu for as long as possible to see the Dussehra Festival on October 6. Thanks!

Night travel from Kullu to Manali should not be a problem since there are night buses from Shimla to Manali via Kullu, but it will be cold. So I guess you ought to be prepared accordingly :D

Thanks so much for your quick response! You don't happen to know anything about the Dussehra Festival on October 6th, do you? Which city has the main festivities, Kullu or Manali?

Nope, I had never been in Kullu during the Dussera, but I have read (and heard) that the main festivity takes place in Kullu, since it is famous for its temples. So expect a lot of 'religious' (or not) crowd in Kullu :D

Thanks! You don't happen to remember the car + driver you hired to take you from Kullu to Rohtang Pass, do you?

Well, we did Shimla to Manali and we did not stop at Kullu. I have to check if I still have the number with me. If I happen to find it out, I will PM it to you but I doubt if it will be of any help since the driver was from Shimla.
