I remember the ramshackle bus I was in took 5-6 hours including a stopover. I guess your jeep will be much faster than that. The roads were pretty bad, even for Indian standards.

You'll be passing near Orchha just before arriving in Jhansi - don't miss out on this gem of a village with huge temples, palaces and cenotaphs, even is it is just for (gasp) an hour. Despite the 46°C heat when I visited last April, I have warm (sic)memories of the 4 days I stayed there before hopping on the train to Ajanta from Jhansi.

I've added a 24-hour stop in Khajuraho to an already crowded schedule because I can't imagine going to India (for the first time) without at least a quick view of that world-famous site. It means, however, shaving a bit of time off Varanasi at one end and of Agra at the other of a four-day segment.

Ned, if you wan't to go from Khajuraho to Agra, there is an overnight train you could take.

Train 1449 departs Mahoba daily at 23:45 and gets to Agra Cant at 06:45. the train ride will cost: -

2 tier air con = Rs 703
3 tier air con = Rs 454
Sleeper class (not air con) = Rs 172

Mahoba is a 3 hour bus ride from Khajuraho.
