Kerala bus information
Kerala bus information
Greetings
I'm all Googled out on finding information on whether certain connections exist or not - if anyone knows of a good site where I can check bus routes I'd be much obliged; the official KSRTC site doesn't seem to contain such useful info.
For information, the journey I'm still struggling to find an answer on is Cheruthuruthy (Shoranur) to Wayanad (Muthanga). Would prefer not to do this via Calicut as it will involve too many connections.
Thanks!

caro7, I think the shortest way to get to Sulthan Bathery/ Muthanga from Cheruthuruthy by KSRTC bus would be via Thrissur and Calicut. If you find that involves too many stops, i am not sure if there is an alternative approach that involves less number of connections as most, if not all, KSRTC buses to Wayanad goes via Calicut.
Thanks 2 cents, I thought that might be the case. The other alternative it looks like is to catch a train from Shoranur to Nilambur Road, and then maybe a bus will go to Wayanad from there... We'll be going on Boxing Day (Dec 26th), so hopefully the travel will be ok whatever we do and everywhere won't be booked up!
I didn't consider the possibility of traveling by train from Shornur to Nilambur and then catching a bus from there to Sultan Bathery. Now that I think about it, it would be a good alternative to traveling by bus the whole way. The train journey would be far more comfortable and the route from Nilambur to Sultan Bathery is supposed to quite scenic. However the condition of the road would have to be taken into consideration before you decide. You could try calling up and speaking to the Wayanad or Malappuram tourism department officials or maybe ring up a tourist information centre or hotel in Nilambur or Sultan Bathery directly to find out if the road is in fairly good condition and the frequency of bus service in that route. Some of the long distance coaches between Kochi and Bangalore go via that route but they would be passing by late at night and you would have to pay almost the full fare even for a ride of about 90 Km to Sultan Bathery from Nilambur.
The trains would be fully booked, with a long waiting list, during the Christmas to New year time. Especially the long distance trains. However for the one between Shornur and Nilambur you might be able to get away with booking a ticket a few days before or buying one on the date of the journey.

Caro,
Not sure on your group's composition and comfort level in roughing out .. For trying out this way, Following needs to be done.. You could take a call !
From Nilambur road Railway Station, you need to get a bus to Sulthan Battery [ Local name Bathery] -- Buses are very limited on this route.. Basically there are few buses [Very Few] from Ooty to Calicut which passes Via Gudalur - (Chundale-Kalpetta) / (S.Bathery -Kalpetta)-Thamaraserry Ghat to reach Calicut ! ..
1) You could get to Kalpetta Or Sulthan Bathery [ Based on the bus which you get on your arrival in Nilambur Road Railway Station]
2) You could board Gundlupet / Nanjangud / Mysore /Bangalore bound bus from Kalpetta Or S.Bathery and get down at "Muthanga Sanctuary"
Yes this route is all along scenic and Buses are limited !
OR (Comfortable Way and better way)
1) From Shoaranur, you reach Calicut
2) From Calicut, Board "Mysore / Bangalore" bound bus and you could get down just in front of Muthanga Sanctuary !
Off-Topic :-
Out of Bandipur /Mudumalai/ wayanad/Muthanga/Tholpetty & Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuaries, Nagarahole Followed by Bandipur is kind-of Better bet for Wildlife Sightings and Nagarhole NP is more Virgin / More forested and kind of "Unique and Different" when compared to the other south indian Sanctuaries.. Just in case you are interested on the other places I mentioned, you could do a search on "Nagarahole" Or "Bandipur" in our forum where i did shared quite a lot of info on the same !..
Hope this helps & If you need more info , Please post
Velu

Thanks so much to you all for your great help, this has made a big difference to how we will shape our itinerary now - I think we will no longer rely on being able to use trains. Thanks to Velu for the extra helpful information on Wayanad as well - I will seek out the posts you have helpfully signposted. Then I hope to find a nice homestay in Sultanbatheri :-)

Hi coconuttree, that's really kind of you. I think we're going to give up on Cheruthuruthy so are now looking for places in Cochin, Calicut and Sultanbatheri. Before when we came to Kerala we just turned up and found places, but at Christmas I'm not sure that's going to be very realistic, so any places I can email and arrange in advance would be best. Thanks for any help - and I have PMed you to offer up some music to say thankyou
