Jodhpur to Udaipur by bus

Hi,
We'll be travelling between Jodhpur and Udaipur in January by bus since there are no trains between these two places. Does anyone have an idea of price and times, and also whether getting a public or rivate bus has any time advantages? Tried to look on the official Rhajastan buses website but no luck getting timetables etc up,

I got the following info from Steven when inquiring about travel in India by train:

Train 1JM departs Jodhpur daily at 10:45 and gets to Marwar Jn. at 13:15.

Train 483 departs Marwar Jn. Daily at 14:25 and gets to Udaipur at 22:00.

These 2 trains have only 2nd class unreserved seats.

It is probably faster and safer to hire a taxi/mini bus but would also be more expensive. Trains aren't a bad option either. Don't know their time table though.

HI well we're now thinking we might go for the Taxi option as this trip is only 2 weeks so don't want to waste any time. Does anyone know what kind of price to pay between Jodhpur-Udaipur, and if we ask the hotel to book it for us will we get ripped off or is it best to trakc down a taxi for yourself?!

i vote you opt for a night bus service. go for a "luxury" and/or "a.c." coach (ask and see if they have volvo buses, cos they are better at shock absorbtion. at any rate ask for a seat in the front half of the bus, not rear.)

it will be cheaper than hiring a taxi (for which you will have to most likely pay for the round trip back to jodhpur, though you will be getting down at udaipur). also it will save you time, cos you will be travelling by night, instead of wasting a day in a bus !!

I took a bus vom Udaipur to Jodhpur 1 1/2 years ago. It took something between 6 and 8 hours and costed around 120 - 150 Rps IIRC - cant find the exact price right now. Was Non-A/C though and got pretty crowded along the way. There are busses leaving every hour though. Should be the same in the other direction.

since you say "got pretty crowded along the way", i surmise that it wasnt a "tourst bus" run by any travel agency, but a "inter city/long distance bus" of the rajasthan state transport department. yes those types do leave every hour and keep picking up passengers on the way. tourist buses however have a "fixed time" (or more than one.. 8 o' clock, 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock at night). for a "luxury " coach the cost should be in the range of 400 ruppees. but there wont be any crowds as only those people who have booked and bought tickets will be allowed in from pre-stated pick-up points. also a.c. bus or volvo "jerk free" buses are common options. i would recomend the Indian Tourist Department Corporation (ITDC) or Rajasthan State Tourism Dept. Corp. (RSTDC, RSRTC bus stand Number is :2544686 in jodhpur) buses for a professional and responsible service.

We used "Kumar Taxis" in Connaught Place, New Delhi for 2 weeks to ferry our luggage around for about 15 days. It cost $445 USD for this service and the guy - Mr Singh was absolutely lovely. Mind you- $445 didn't seem like much as it was spread between 7 of us. They are in the Lonely Planet- under Delhi I think? We found them really flexible and really good.
