Does anyone know if an Indian Drivers License is valid in the US? Anything special that is needed? How do we go about it? Thanks

One hopes not.

Seriously... I doubt it very much, but you can get an International driving permit in India that will see you through the first year (better check that USA is one of the countries that accepts them...).

Probably the main difference between driving here and in USA is that in USA everyone drives on the wrong side of the road!!!!!

You need to get an international driving license for that, for this go to your RTO and apply for it.

In Canada an international driving license can be had through the CAA,
- It's about $15cdn.

But seriously would I really need one just to drive a moped in Goa?

altmtl - you have revived a 2006 Thread here! And yes, legally you have to have either an International Driving Licence or an Indian Driver's Licence to drive a moped, scooter, motorbike, car etc.
Every cloud has a silver lining!

Even if you obtain an international driving licence I do not recommend driving in Europe and US, as dear Nick said we are used to driving " On the wrong side" in case of emergency your instinct will turn the wheel towards left and it could be dangerous... well it was my experience and God really saved me

He's wanting it for driving in Goa, Jyotiji! And is Canada the same as US rules, altmtl, or does it follow British rules i.e. driving on the left side of the road. India is the latter, the same as Australia and New Zealand. I think of it as driving on the 'right' side of the road, even though we drive on the left!!!

That 50 rupees thing may work for locals, but I wouldn't risk it for one minute. Always better to come forearmed, and yes, if you intend getting around by some sort of motor vehicle, then bring an International Licence.
