Did you have to bribe the examiner to do a proper test?

Dunno what test he did. Others are not allowed inside the area- security gate and all. My son told me they made him drive around the course once.

So everyone in Hyderabad gets a proper test?
Must be why the traffic seemed just a touch more sane there than here. They were doing us two at a time, one sitting in the back, the other driving. The girl who took the test before me had to drive to the end of the road and turn round; all I had to do was drive back --- I thought it rather unfair, as she was obviously a beginner. All this was on the public road near the RTO where, atthe same time, another guy was ticking off the two-wheelers as they staggered down the road. The guy from the driving school seemed to be the Master of Ceremonies. |

That is very common in Hyderabad too- and probably most of India, wherever you go through a driving school.
Maybe thirty years ago I went a driving test in Bombay. No driving school, so the guy made me drive about half an hour in rush hour traffic in South Mumbai, and then made me parallel park after reversing up an incline near Princess Street, where we had some good kulfi and a cigarette. My wife went through a driving school in the same city. She never even had to get out of the passenger seat of the car to get her licence. PS: Driving competence in Hyderabad is almost certainly worse than in Chennai. |

![]() Driving licences are a joke. Ask any autorickshaw driver; chances are he won't have one. |

LOL, you two! I agree with your last post, Captain - I should think half the 'drivers' for scooters, motorbikes, autorickshaws out our way wouldn't have licences. Not uncommon to see underage boys on scooters or motorbikes either. Every now and then the RTO get out at strategic positions for a 'purge' checking papers and licences, but the word gets out and these scallywags lie low until it's over.
I was of the same disposition as you re the final check for driving even after my daughter had hers!

Three times, no not really
![]() There is a requirement to have a Learner's licence. There is minimum period of holding the Learner's licence. There is a theory test. There is the required documentation... Look, there are certain cash payments which "ease" certain dealings with bureaucracy, but can a foreigner just walk in and get a driving licence? No. Oh... You will be travelling on a Tourist visa? Remember what I said about "resident"? Tourists cannot be resident. Forget. If you must drive in India, do it after you have passed your UK test. |

Taraferry, I have deleted two of your posts and left one remaining. Keep in mind this is not a chat room and don't expect instanteous answers! Most times we need to be patient for a member to come along and give you an answer.
Nick has covered it for you - I would add, if you come to India, use your UK licence to get an International Driving Permit in UK from the AAA, and that licence will cover you should you wish to drive a motorbike or car here. |

He hasn't got a UK licence: he wants an easy-to-get foreign licence that will allow him to drive on UK roads.

driving in India

To get a license, you need to show proof of residency. You might try getting an international license in your home country and then use it when you are in India. |
