How to reach Darjeeling from Kolkata.

Hi,
I'm planning to reach Darjeeling on 17th Nov, no later than 5pm from Kolkata (Bangalore to Kolkata by Air). I've tentatively planned for Train to NJP from Howrah Jn.
Is there a private cab that I can hire from Airport or Kolkata to Darjeeling? What would be the reasonable cost? Please let me know if you know any such service. Also are bus travel faster and safer? Any other suggestions are always welcome.

I have just returned from a 15 day trip of North East(Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong,Nepal,etc).

I had travelled from hyd - Kol - Hyd by air. Between Kol-Djg-Kol the best way to travel is to take the overnite train. Darjeeling Mail is the best option. It leaves Kol @ 1015 PM & reaches NJP @ 800 AM. Book a cab from NJP to Darjeeling. The minute you step out of the train, a lot of touts will surround you, DONT ENTERTAIN THEM. Walk out of the station and you will see the taxi stand. Look for WB 74/75 registration number of Taxi. You should be able to get a taxi for Rs.1300-1700 as i am not sure if it would be season time at that point. If not you can even travel by shared taxi which should cost you 200 appr per head. They carry about 10 people in the shared sumo/mahindra max.

The return trip should be same more or less. Djng Mail leaves NJP @ 8pm in the night and reached Kol at 6 in the morning.
