Cool How to: Buy a Royal Enfield for - 2 week trip from New Delhi to Mumbai - EXPORT to UK

Hello there,

I having been looking at some of the older posts as well as some of the other useful information on this site, but I would like to ask someone for some advice on my plan to export a bike from India to UK.

I am planning to be India for two weeks, flying into New Delhi around Feb or March… there I want to buy a Royal Enfield (VINTAGE) and ride around for 10 days in total… maybe I will do a mini tour (5 days) to see a bit of the Himalayas and then ride back down through Jahipur to Ahmedabad (5 days). From there I want to ship the bike back to UK (I have already found a shipping company that will do it)…and then from Ahmedabad I want to take a train to Mumbai (which I guess should take me not more than 2 days) and from there fly back to UK.

So does anyone know from experience if this plan is possible, considering also the routes and times it will take to get the correct documentation?

More specifically can does anyone know where to buy a vintage royal enfield in New Delhi (that will be in good condition for such a trip), also what documents are needed and how do I go about getting them; also what are the best routes for this time of the year (I am guessing closer to Himalayas will be very cold?)

Thanks in advance

I know that only Indian residents are legally allowed to buy cars, I strongly suspect that the same provision would apply to motorbikes.

You'll probably find someone who is happy to give you their bike in exchange for money, but sorting the paperwork out could be a real nightmare!

Heh... How are you as a mechanic? I'd strip it down and export it as parts.

The regulations for exporting bikes out of Delhi are easier than in most other states and so the requirement for documents is less and the process is much smoother. Maybe change your plans to have the back delivered back to Delhi for exporting.

Many shippers pack the bikes into wooden slated crates with only a small amount of plastic wrapped on the bike. Most of the time the bikes arrive at their destination with broken levers, headlights, speedo's and dented tanks and mudgaurds and ripped seats. Some that I have heard of arrive with fork lift damage to the wheels.

There are very few vintage bikes available off the shelf, when they are they are usually dressed up to look vintage on the outside and little is good on this inside.

There are a large number of companies that supply bikes for export in Delhi. Most will be dubious, either using local sourced copied parts, Chinese/ Korean or recycled buffed old parts. Few are diligently providing genuine best quality parts, these are hard to get and are expensive but last in the long term.

Some companies like Lali Singh take orders and supply after 6 months, such is the waiting list, others may supply in less time say 1 month upwards, based on parts availability and current orders of bikes. Any that can supply quickly may be supplying with cheap local parts and viewed with caution.

It will not be possible to have the bike registered into your own name unless you have proof of residency such as a lease agreement or bank account. For importing into the UK ownership is not required under a tourist visa.

Try Soni Motors in Karol Bagh, DELHI.

I hired 4 bikes from him in June-July, good service. I also spoke to guys who were there to buy bikes and ship them home.
