Hiring Car & Drive in Khajuraho & Orchha

I'm curious to know if anyone has hired a car and driver to get from Khajuraho to Orchha. In general, when one wants to hire a car and driver for the day, is this done through an agency or in a car park/taxi stand area. (I've never been to India).

As I'll only have 3 weeks, my friend and I are ready to spend a little extra to be able to move from point A to point B when we want to and it may be nice to stop en route if something catches our eye.

I've also thought, for example, that we might hire a car and driver and ask them to drive us to some rural villages around Orchha or when we're in Darjeeling to do the same for a day and take in some tea plantations.

I like to have my freedom and not be tied to a group tour. Wondering if this is a way to get that freedom, while traveling in India? Please share any tips on cost, best way to identify a reputable driver/guide, etc.

Funny you should ask.I just arrived yesterday morning in Orccha via a car and driver from Khajuraho.The most often quoted price to me was two thousand rupees.Then when I explained that that's a bit much for a solo traveller it came down to 1200 on a couple of occasions and finally on my last night my hotel manager said he knew a driver going at 5.00 the next morning with an empty car to pick up some people in Jhansi and would do it for seven hundred rather than have no fare on the way there.The road wasn't bad at all and was a lovely drive.I'm a terrible bargainer about these things but my hotel manager was a nice guy and offered me the best prices.
