Hiring a Mahindra without driver!

Last year in Pushkar i manage to hire a Mahindra jeep for RPS650/day, only to realise that i had to have the driver with me as well! I ended up driving the car i hired, but this guy wouldn't leave me in peace! This year i am off to Jaisalmer in the beginning of June. Please guys any infos about hiring a Mahindra in Jaisalmer, where and how much, but i beg you, without the escort this time..?

the jeep is everything, the driver is nothing, in view of the desi owner. If you can find a drive away jeep, I'd be surprised.

Not very enlightened but Thanks anyway bijapuri!
I must disagree though. In this world now one is nothing! Both driver and "desi owner" are part of the same game. If one of the two was nothing, then it wouldn't be a game at all. Would it now?
If it was for Pushkar, i wouldn't ask at all. You see wherever i go, i like to make friends in "high places".
It is Jaisalmer i am off to and for the first time. That's why the thread

Regards Konstantin

Thanks for replying edwardseco
I think hiring a jeep is a far better alternative to any desert Safari.
It gives you the feeling of absolute independence and freedom. You can roam the desert any time you like and the way you like it. The Mahindra is the working horse of India for many decades. Is reliable, tough in an old fashion way and the definition of a desert adventure. I'll do my best to get one in Jaisalmer even if i have to stay in a 200rps lodge in Pahar ganj in order to afford it.

there's more than one reason to have the driver. He knows where the minefields are (Jaisailmer is right against the border) and he knows where the smuggling gangs are too. On your own? good luck . . .

He knows how to reach the "sign posts", too!

Are you experienced at desert navigation?

Well guys! I wasn't exactly thinking of heading towards the.. Talibans! or "marching to conquer Akaba!". I only wanted to go to areas like Barmer, even visiting interesting sites in a 20-30 km radial around Jaisalmer. I'll have a good army compass with me and i thought that would have been enough (I intend to leave the ..M16 at home!). Suppose if i fail you'll hear my news from the Red Cross.. gasp!
