| Help please! Crossing the India/Nepal border with a motorcycle Hello friends! Even though I searched thoroughly for an answer to my question I could'nt find any on the forum, so here it is... I plan to spend a year or so in northern India & Nepal starting in december, but since the winter seems to be more bearable in parts of Nepal I thought I'd buy a motorcycle upon arrival in Delhi and head straight to Nepal for a few months... Hence you understand how upset I would be if I showed up at the border and have the customs tell me I can't get in with the bike or I have to pay a huge deposit ![]() Your help will be much appreciated! An until then, Peace! ![]() |

| Touring Guru | At the crossing ahead of Pithoragarh, i was told that Indian citizens can ride across without a permit and bikes with valid indian papers (including Tax certificates) are given permits at the rate of INR60 a day. They also make you sign a slip which states that the bike is for personal use and not for spare parts! Not sure of the rule for foreign nationals. |

| Crossing to Nepal with your Enfield Ive (canadian citizen) crossed the border with an Enfield (indian plates/reg) a few times....no problems. Just park your bike and check in at immigration; don't bother mentioning the bike. They probably wont even ask you about it. If they do just say that you will be returning to India with it. If they still hassle you then just get the visa and drive through anyway. Still dont like that option, go to a different border crossing. The border is pretty loose so I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck ps I'm crossing in again on December 1 over the eastern Nepal border crossing with a bike. |

| There actually is a per day charge but it doen't appear to be carefully applied as I have heard lots of ways of evading it.. |

| permit for driving with Indian number plate in Nepal Quote:
do you (or anybody else please) know the daily fee for a motorbike with foreign number plate in Nepal? we're planning to take our Indian motorbike to Nepal and stay there for at least 2 months. A friend mentioned it's 150 Nep. Rupees a day - that is really expensive, no? Alternatively, not paying any fee and driving through anyway - what chances are there that police will stop you anytime anywhere and make problems about the missing permit? Thanks for help everybody, a. Last edited by ariyanandi; Mar 16th, 2010 at 10:18.. Reason: ps i am not Indian but foreigner.

| hey guys. i am in pushkar right now and seriously considering buying an enfield. my original plan was to go to nepal for a month then fly from katmandu to kuala lumpur due to that 2 month rule. would driving the bike to nepal and selling it there pose a lot of difficultues? if not i would consider skipping nepal and touring india during that time instead. would selling a 1984 350cc enfield that appears to be in fabulous running order be fairly easy? any help i could get on this matter would be greatly appreciated. |

selling a royal enfield is not a problem here in India but the paper should be in order and as you are from Canada, then why don't you hire one instead. You will find many. You are in Pushkar, so either in Jaipur or in Delhi you could find many enfields on rent. I am not sure but if you fly out from Delhi then hiring from Delhi would be a better option. I had a friend in Alwar (in between Delhi Jaipur, 120km from delhi), who used to rent out royal enfields...... you could check out if you want to with Mr. Himmat Singh or Gutsy 00919828383183 if he still does so or not??? Enjoy India..... ![]() Pragyan Paromita (Delhi) ![]()
