Question Car hire from Pathankot for entire Dharamsala stay

Hi,

Sorry for barging into this thread uninvited ... I will be traveling to Dharamsala/Mcleodganj in the last week of Sept (had posted about it earlier too, but that plan has changed a bit now). I'm planning to spend around 5 days/4 nights at Mcleodganj (HPTDC Hotel Bhagsu), during which I will cover all the surrounding areas like Palampur, Bajinath etc, alongwith the local surroundings of Dharamsala/Mcleod. One day of the tour is reserved for Triund trek.

Now, I'm planning to hire a car from Chakki Bank/PTK for the entire trip. I spoke to Mr.Anuj Sharma (ph no. 09878994179 - given in the post by delhiwala), and a got a rate of Rs.6500 for a TATA Indica for the entire 5D/4N (includes pick-up/drop from Chk bank + all sight seeing).

Do you feel that the quote offered here is fine, or should I bargain a bit on it?

Thanks in advance!

~Suman.

For the length of trip and number of days that seems like a correct rate to me, suman. However another option might be for you to take the taxi only when you need it. You can easily walk around McLeod Ganj areas and I figure you might use a couple of days doing this plus your trek. For outside areas like Palampur etc. hire a taxi for one day only. Then hire again for the trip back down to Chakki Bank. They used to be around 1000 rupees one way i.e. taxi up and down will be about 2,000 rupees, and one day's trip might be approx. 1500 - 1800 rupees, thus cheaper than holding a car for the full length of time.
Every cloud has a silver lining!

Thanks Aishah, for the super-quick reply!

Ya... I had planned the same earlier, that I'll take a cab as and when required. But for pick-up or drop from Chakki Bank to Dharamsala only, the taxi operators were charging 1500 x 2 i.e., 3000/-. So I thought rather than spending 3000 + 2000(for one day trip outside Dharamsala)=5000, I would instead spend 6500 for keeping the cab with me. At times it is also convenient if we have own vehicle all along, isnt it (say if I have a dinner a bit later at night and such)?

What do u think of the idea? Because the deal of keeping the car with me all along is not fixed yet, and I still have the flexibility of sticking to my earlier "on-demand-hire" plan!

Well all I can say is those taxi rates certainly have increased since the last time I took one (about 5 years ago!!) If your party include young children, elderly etc. and people who are not up to much walking, keeping the car makes sense in this case. And as I said the price quoted sounds quite reasonable to me.

Well.. my party includes just the two of us - me n my wife. So I can take up the "cab-on-demand" plan easily. Or rather what I can do - I can keep the cab with me for 2-3 days in Dharamshala/Mcleod itself, i.e., can travel the to & fro ride from ChkBnk to Dharamsala by public bus, and book a Dharamshala based car-agency for a 3 day local car rental. Now what do u think of this plan, Aishah?

And by the way... does anyone here have a contact of any known travel agency/car rental based out of Dharamsala/Mcleod itself?

Any leads, delhiwala? Ur last contact was really very useful !

I would like to recommend the name of Narender (09882149066/09816582682) He is based out of Dharamsala and operates his Alto in all surrounding areas. A very affable and down to earth person. If you get to speak to him you can tell that the Punjabi from Chennai recommended.

Thanks a lot for the contact info

I called up Mr.Narendar (09816582682), and spoke to him about the plans. After speaking to him, I think the car hire wont be a problem... will have a final discussion with him in the evening about the itinerary & rates. Will definitely keep you posted about the developments!

Well, suman, your changing plans all sound good to me! If you are doing the bus to McLeod Ganj/ Dharamsala you will be saving a lot of money. If your bus from Pathankot only goes to Dharamsala you have an option of taxi up to McLeod Ganj which used to be about 150 rupees, or a shared jeep for about 18r. per person, or another bus, very cheap! Bearing in mind prices may have changed since last I was there.

Post

Finally spoke to Mr.Narendar (09816582682) about the itinerary & rates, and the rates he gave me are as follows -

1. Dharamshala+Mcleod local + Bajinath/Palampur + ChkBnk Drop (3 days) = 4000/-
2. Above plan + one day Dalhousie/Chamba before final drop to ChkBnk = 6000/-
3. If I include the pick-up from ChkB too, 1200 - 1500/- extra (I felt that it'll be negotiable with the final amount)

So... how are the rates here? Should I bargain further on them?

Seems to me your original quote from Mr Sharma was the best if you want the full deal!
