Haridwar-Uttarkashi: best way to travel?

Hi everyone,
I plan to go from Haridwar to Uttarkashi in march 2012 and looking for an easy and confortable way to get there (since I am traveling with an older person).
Is it possible to rent a car with driver from Haridwar (just one way, since i will stay for 3 days in uttarkashi..and then try find another car to come back to haridwar)?
How long does it take this journey (around 140km)?
How much would be a fare fee?
Other possibilities are going by bus, would you recommend?

Hi, the best way is to get to rishikesh and get a share jeep to uttarkashi around 200 rupees.To get to rishikesh fromHaridwar you can get a train ,bus or taxi. I normaly take the bus(23 rupees) as it takes about the same time as a taxi but is 500 rupees cheaper.It is also only 5 minutes walk from the train station that is if you arrive in Haridwar by train. Do you know long does usually takes to travel this distance (rishikesh-uttarkashi) by jeep? Around 4-5 hours?
Is the road condition ok this time (march 2012)?

Hi, again. it will take 5to6 hours to reach Uttarkashi maybe longer, it depends on the state of the road. During monsoon and afterwards there are often landslides, though it should be fine around the time you wish to go. I forgot to mention that the share taxis leave Rishikesh early in the morning around 6 or 7 a.m. so unless you stay in Rishikesh the night before you will have to get up really early in haridwar to get there on time. Of course you can get a whole taxi at any time. Yours Captain Kit.

would please let me know how did you finally reach to Uttarkashi from Rishikesh.
Is it must to stay at rishikesh to catch shared jeeps or one can get the bus/jeep from rishikesh at about 8am or 9am?

I finally decided to go by car from Hardwar, since older people from the family came together.

A small Tata Indica (most popular and cheap in travel agencies), with driver, got around 2000 - 2500 rupees (one way).

I came back alone from Uttarkashi by bus to Hardwar, and had to get up early to get a 5:00..5:30a.m. bus (it may change, so better be early).

Since I didnt' look for the bus/jeep for the way Rishikesh-Uttarkashi, I don't know about the times. But much probably they are like Captain Kit had said in the previous post.
