Getting from Mumbai to Jaisalmer

Hi there

I'm obviously new to the forum. so hi all

I'm going to India for the second time this October and i'm going from Mumbai to Jaisalmer

I tried makemytrip for a flight, but it seems like, there's no flights available.

I then searched for a train, wich sounds appealing. However, i would like to get there faster, anyone knows if it's possible to rent a car, with a driver obviously. I'm not driving in Mumbai

Thanks

No, not by car, that would take maybe 30-32 hours.

Get a train (17-19 hours) or flight to Jodhpur, then a daytime or overnight traain to Jaisalmer (6-7 hours).

www.ixigo.com for flight info.

www.erail.in for train info.

Yes, however, don't do the long train journey from Mumbai and then the overnight train to Jaisalmer, it wil be extremely tiring especially as the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer section is short and doesn't allow enough time for sleep, the touts at Jaisalmer just love tired tourist.

Ok cool. I figured when arriving to Jodhpur, we'll stay overnight, take a visit to the fort and stuff.

However it's my girlfriends birthday that day, so i wanted to make it something special, like the camel safari. Celebrating a birthday in Jodhpur, just seem kinda boring, i don't know

Then you'll have to pay for a flight to Jodhpur, then the train (or taxi).

Jaisalmer is special, and would be the perfect place for the birthday girl, but not if she's too tired to enjoy the place.

Why not change your Itinerary around a little, dinner at the lake palace hotel in Udaipur would be special, and you can get to Udaipur from Mumbai a lot quicker than Jaisalmer.

direct flight, or direct train 3 days a week (cant see the days at the moment, the 2 websites I use no longer recognise Udaipur as a destination, typical Indian railways, all will be well later, anyway, on the other days, you can get a fast daytime or overnight train to Ahmedabad (about 8 hours) then a bus (5 hours) to Udaipur.

Or...a Mumbai-Delhi flight, then a fast train (less than 3 hours) to Agra for the Taj Mahal.

If you have the time and money MFG the last suggestion by Steve would be the most 'relaxing'. Fly to Udaipur, stay the night there and have dinner at Lake Palace. There has been talk that they don't take dinner guests only, and if this is the case, then go to Ambrai restaurant which is lakeside, a beautiful romantic setting... Two nice places for the night are Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel or closer to Ambrai are Haveli on the Lake, or Udai Koti (I think that's how you spell the last). Next day either bus to Jodhpur or if you can afford it take a car and see Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh on the way. The overnight train Jod - Jaisalmer leaves Jod. around 11.15 p.m.
If you're keen to have that safari for the birthday, then fly to Jodhpur and bus or train to Jaisalmer.
