Finding agent to register motorcycle

As mentioned on other threads, I have recently bought a Suzuki Access Scooter. Unfortunately, my contact who was handling my registration has fallen through and tomorrow is 30 days -- meaning my temporary tags are expiring. I have the RTO info on how to register, but I am hoping to find an agent who will take care of the paperwork for me. How do I do that? (I am in Delhi). I also need to get a license.

No, asking the dealership is not an option.

Go to your local authority office, and you will find 100 agents lurking around, both for license and registration.

Ask a driving school: they know all about dealing with RTO stuff. Or... I guess... do it yourself!

You could try giving AAUI a call -->details

I am a member of AASI (AA of Southern India) and always go there for advice on driving licence changes and IDPs. I think they do registration too. Once you have paid a modest membership fee, they are serving you as a member, so you do not have to worry about the commercial motive of your agent.

What did he fall through?

Never been in such situation as dealers from which we buy scooters or bikes even cars take care of such things plus from last some years they have pre alloted numbers with them, secondly insurence is also to be done at time of registeration simuntanously.

CityMONK: It is the dealer who is not getting it done -- who is no longer a dealer so not much incentive there, and also a friend so I can't hassle him. The insurance is finished, tho.

Nick & Shashank: Thanks. I will look into the AAUI before scouting out whoever is standing outside. As a foreigner, and a female by herself, I'm a little wary of asking for that kind of attention. But, I'll keep it in mind if I can't figure anything out less direct.

P.s. AAUI has a lot of benefits otherwise, and only 800 to enroll for a 2 wheeler. Even besides registration, looks like a good deal!

I've been to Southern equivalent twice for IDP; they are friendly and helpful, and much easier to deal with than the RTO.

Although, to be honest, once one has all the right docs, RTO is not too hard to deal with!

Well, thought y'all would like to know, I got my registration finished myself. I talked to AAUI but they didn't want to touch it because the temporary registration was expiring the next day. They sent me to the RTO to talk to them, & they were nice but "closed" for the day.

I went back this morning, finished everything in a little more than an hour, & paid a rather hefty fine of 2000 rupees for late registration (late by one day!). Believe me, I am not happy with my dealer/"friend" who flaked on me after promising many times to do this for me.

Of course, when I left the RTO I found that my bike had been towed by the Delhi police for "illegal" parking. Oddly, neither the chokidar nor the RTO official who inspected my bike mentioned that the multiple bikes in front of the RTO were all illegally parked. But that 200 rupees was a pittance compared to the 2000* I'd just been fleeced.

*I have a receipt with 2000 listed as the fine, so it wasn't "under the table." A legal, totally absurd fine. Taking lessons from the US I suppose....

I thought it wasn't possible for a non-citizen to register ownership?
Please give more information.

Yes, it is perfectly possible. I'm sure that Jyoti and I are not the only foreigners here to have registered vehicles. One must be resident, I think.

Closed for the day; closed for lunch; just going for tea; we only do that on Thursdays --- Songs of the RTO

Wonderful story! That's about the only parking-fine story I've ever laughed at!

Congratulations on your registered vehicle

@bjp --

Yes, foreigners can register a vehicle. You have to have a resident visa (student/business/employee/PIO/OCI, etc.); you have to be registered with the FRRO; and you have to have a proof of address. Oh, and it would probably be good to have a vehicle.

@Nick --

Well, I'm glad someone is amused.

Oh, the 200 was 100 for the parking fine & 100 for the petrol to take the bike to the impound "lot" 3 km away...

oh, ok, so it comes down to the problem of doing it with a tourist visa. Have to register it with someone else's name. (There is something that dealers do in that case, but I can't remember what it is, what the consequent problem is.) .........It seems to be quite the problem of my life now, the visa/residence business; maybe I need to go to shaadi.com )

Nobody, in their right mind, would let you. The registered owner of a car is responsible for what gets done with it.

I know. (Hence my interest, originally.) It would have to be a situation where the person was actually a friend.
