Driving from Corbett to Almora/Nainital

I'm planning on driving from corbett to Almora, and nainital. Is it a good idea to drive? I would prefer to self drive than hire a driver for the trip.
Any tips would be appreciated and companies who would be able to rent out cars (self-driven) from Ramnagar on.
I realise this is not normally done, but still want to give it a good shot, before I hire a car and driver.

Nope, did not get any info. Spoke to many travel agents, but renting self driven cars is not very easy in India. Heard the roads were also not the very best both in condition and safety. Dacoits, I guess!
