Drive times in Rajasthan?
I've seen lots of driving distance charts in Rajasthan, but still can't figure out how long it takes to get between one place and another by car.
There are variables in all driving trips: dependent on the road conditions, the kind of car you have, how many stops you make, how fast you can tolerate going without losing your mind, etc. Just looking for approximates. Variables are: Ambassador Elite, can take rugged roads going fast as long as I don't hit my head on the roof of the car (don't laugh, it happened on my last trip!). Going from Pushkar to Bikaner. Bikaner to Jaisalmar. Jaisalmer to Jodphur. Jodphur to Udaipur. Obviously a well worn travel path for many, so how long is it going to take on these trips between cities? |

We did the hired car tour of Rajasthan in 2001, and I don't think I'll ever forget the sheer terror I felt sharing the road with speeding buses and overloaded lorries. Our ambassador had a top speed of about 60 km/h, but fortunately averaged closer to around 35-40, what with all the traffic and bad roads. So while I don't remember the specific driving times between points I can suggest that you can estimate them based on the average speed I've given.

driving from delhi to jaipur can get an average of 60-70 km/hour as the road is real good.
for the rest of Rajasthan, 'iyou' is correct the average can only be 35-40 km/hour. enjoy the journey!...there is more joy in the journey than the destination. |

I get it now.......
Thanks guys......that gives me a much clearer picture of whats up ahead.
I went from Madurai to Munnar last year, and it took an easy five hours. Very nice trip through Tamil Nadu countryside. I kept wondering why the driver kept remarking on how great the condition of the roads are in TN. I can see now that the drive may be a bit slower. Sort of like the difference between driving in Oregon and Washington State...as soon as you cross the bridge into Washington, the potholes begin. I still have this impression in my mind after reading an old post by AlanD on this topic: saw the largest number of road kill between Bikaner and Jaisalmer than any road he'd been on before. For some reason that left me thinking you have to get up a pretty good speed to do any damage to others you share the road with. Anyone else care to comment on their drive experiences? |

Well, I could comment on Oregon and Washington. Living in Portland and having property in Washington, I drive in both states. I haven't noticed any difference in the number of potholes in either place. Both are pretty good, especially when compared to India.
