We are going to be in Mangalore and were hoping to hire a driver to take us to Cochin. Is this doable? Anyone know the distance roughly and the state of the roads?

We hired a bus to transport our wedding entourage from Cochin to Mangalore.
It's an all day drive for sure. I believe there's a conveniant overnight train that will get you there much more comfortably.

Train 6603 departs Mangalore (Mon, Wed, & Fridays only) at 22:00 and gets to Ernakulam Junction (for Cochin) at 07:50.
2-tier air con = Rs 785
Sleeper Class = Rs 190 (not air con)

Road from Mangalore to Kannur, north Kerala
I recently took a cab from Kannur to Mangalore to get to the airport.
the journey took just over four hours. The roads were ok but not great i.e. not tarmacadamed all the way and with the usual potholes. You couldn't go at any speed.
As previous poster says - it would take most of the day to get down as far as Cochin.
