You can find a bus for Haridwar at ISBT Kashmirigate. There are buses running practically every half an hour. I don't know what the present fare is but it is under 200/- As for car, well depends upon what vehicle you choose and where you get it from. I suggest you ask at the local taxi stands for their prices.
In my opinion, you would be better off taking the Shatabdi from Delhi to Haridwar it is an easier journey. From Delhi to Haridwar could take as long as 6 hours on a bus (if not more)

I think you should consider the train option as well. There is this excellent Shatabdi Express AC train that gets you there in just 4 and half hours.
Train # 2017 DEHRADUN SHTBDI leaves New Delhi NDLS at 06.50 in the morning to reach Haridwar HW at 11.25 AM.
Breakfast is served on board.
I think its the way to go!
Fare is Rs 435.

2055 Jan Shatabdi is even better. It starts from New Delhi at 3:25 PM and reaches Haridwar at 7:30 PM. Fare is only Rs. 345 in AC Chair Car and just Rs. 107 in non AC chair car.

Regular buses are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate at 30 min. interval, There are Semi Deluxe and Deluxe bus services also. Ordinary Bus fare is Rs. 150 only.

I was not lucky when i went last year. I was in a hurry though and sat in a local bus which took around 6hrs to reach there.
If you can wait, ISBT will surely have some decent buses.

Best would still be to catch a train.
While coming back, there is a shatabdi train which takes very less time for delhi. Get advance booking there for return

Ok guys
We have a dilemma and can’t decide if we should hire a car/taxi from Delhi airport to Haridwar or take a train from Delhi.
We arrive at Delhi airport on an international flight at about 12noon. If the flight is delayed then any train ticket booked for that afternoon might be ruined. That’s why we are thinking of hiring a car/taxi from Delhi airport to Haridwar.
Once we get to Haridwar we travel to Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath by car.

I have noticed that the taxi hire cost is quite expansive if we hire from Delhi.

Can some one give me a clearer idea as to how long the travel time is by car/taxi? Some people say it is 4.5 hours others say 6 hours.

Also, could you tell me how frequent the trains are from Delhi to Haridwar?
Thanks

The drive during the day should take around 6 hours from Delhi airport to Haridwar and maybe even a little longer, depending on traffic. Of this, getting out of Delhi will take more than an hour! (that 4.5 vs 6 depends on from where you start, I guess)

Weekends are usually busy on the highway there with small sized traffic.

Can't help with the train question, you could check erail.in or even ixigo.com which has started a train section.

SKS, there is a train that leaves for Haridwar from Nizamuddin station at night, and reaches Haridwar early in the morning, you could take that if you think that you might miss the afternoon trains.

Its best to travel by train. Nothing is more comfortable than the overnight train. Late evening road travel through some parts of the route is not advisable.

For any onward journey, the best thing is to pickup a cab at Haridwar. The drivers are more experienced in mountain travel and understand the area well.

I must admit I have no idea how many railway stations in Delhi and which stations the trains depart for Haridwar.

I would appreciate if you would let me know.

Our International flight should arrive at Delhi at about 12 noon (if not delayed).
To go through the customs and immigration should take about an hour.
A taxi journey from the airport to Railway station would take about an hour.

I believe there is a train that leaves Delhi at 15:25pm for Haridwar. May we could take this train. What do you think?

ragz, you mentioned that “Late evening road travel through some parts of the route is not advisable”.
If we take a car from Delhi airport, we hope to leave Delhi around 2pm. Do you think that is too late for the Haridwar journey by road?

Indizen,
Our journey is as follows:
Haridwar – Gangotri – Gaumukh – Kedarnath – Badrinath - Delhi

1. to figure out the train options that you have. Goto http://indianrail.gov.in/, Navigate to "Train Between Important Stations", and query up your train. You check the availability and schedule too.
2. yous safe options are trains, in order of preference:
- 2205 : NZM DDN AC EXP : 23:55
- 4041 : +MUSSOORIE EXP : 21:05
3. Leaving at 2 should be ok I guess. There is no hard time, its just that personally I am not too comfortable driving through some of those areas, late night.
I would recommend you to take the train and pick up cab at Haridwar. You have a long journey through some really tough mountainous terrain and its better to pickup a local driver who knows the area and is experienced in driving through it.

There is a Jan Shatabdi Express also at 3:30 PM, reaches Haridwar at around 7 PM. Delhi Haridwar is a very common route, ant driver will get you here, but yes avoid night time.
