I see no point in torturing yourself with a long hard bus journey.

You should be asking how to get around this problem.

You can get your hotel to watch your luggage, or leave your luggage in the cloak room at the train station, then you can spend the day in Delhi.

Or, you can go and visit Agra, Bharatpur or Alwar and get a direct overnight train from any of those places to Jodhpur.
.

method in madness

i chose this method because I have an 8 yr old and 1 yr old and don't want to be walking aimlessly around all day. I'd rather just jump on a bus ( 1 yr old can sleep) and get to Jodhpur. I've done the trip several times at night and would like to do luxury bus but none of the websites seem to work for Rajasthan

I'm sure someone will be along soon to give a bus booking website.

10 hours on a bus with an 8 year old and a 1 year old, you're a better person than me, that would be a nightmare journey for me.

The Shatabdi departs New Delhi at 06.05, (arrives at Alwar at 08:44) and gets to Jaipur at 10.45.

Then the Marudhar Express departs Jaipur at 11.50 and gets to Jodhpur at 17.30.

12 hours on trains has got to be better than 10 hours on a bus, just because you can get up and move about.

I'm only having a wild guess that the bus will take 10 hours, it wouldn't surprise me if it took 12 hours.

Personally, I'd take the kids to Alwar for the day, then get the overnight train from Alwar (20:54) to Jodhpur (05:00 if on time).

delhi - Jodhpur

Thanks Steven. That is good information. Following jodhpur we will be spending 1 mth in Gujarat and I plan to use a car and driver for any long trips (which is a first for me). Don't worry I have spent many years in outback Australia and used to very long trips in cars etc...
