Nothing to do with trains, But it is for the first time I am coming across senior concession in buses. Is it offered by Karnataka Road Transport Corporation only, or applicable in other cases too; can we please have a bit more of light on this.

I only found out about the senior discount on KSRTC bus fares on my previous visit to Karnataka last month. I had just purchased my ticket (fortunately only for a short trip of 35km), and an older gentleman sitting near me showed the conductor some document as he bought his ticket. So I asked the conductor if there was a seniors' discount, and was told yes, 25%, for age 60 and older. Glad that I knew that for my Shimoga to Bangalore trip -- it saved me Rs 55.

I don't know if any other states offer this concession. I never thought to ask. (Not that I ride long-distance buses very much -- I much prefer the train if possible, if I'm not traveling by bike.)

Next time I take the bus from Chennai to Mamallapuram I'll ask.
It's all part of the adventure of travelling!

This is a very interesting news, of which I was not aware, never heard from anyone before. Thanks a lot. So at least Karnataka government buses have started giving 25% concession.
thanks for the info.

Oh My. Made innumerable trips to Karnataka and some of them by Bus, but never realised this. Though I am not eligible, my Parents who have made many more trips are and have never known this.

Don't know of any Road transport service that does.

Concessions for senior citizens in bus fares

The below list contains concession offered to seniors by some of the state transport corporations in India.

This effort is a follow up of this post (Do you need train information?).

Please note:
  • The listed details are purely on the basis of information from internet. Ground reality could be different.
  • The concessions are applicable only in state transport corporation buses, unless otherwise mentioned.
  • Those states on which no information on senior citizen concession was found is not mentioned here.
  • This list includes only senior concession, and no other concessions (such as handicap, disease etc) are mentioned here.
  • It is also mandatory in all buses to have at least 2 seats reserved for senior citizens usually near the door infront of the bus. Also buses have to carry any items such as wheel chair or walking stick free of cost.

The details of the concession offered by the states are listed below. The states are loosely lumped together following the South-West-North-East (of India) pattern. In the entries below ‘document’ refers to the document that a person is expected to carry to avail the benefit.

Karnataka:
Eligibility: Senior Citizen of Karnataka aged 60 and above.
Concession: 25% concession in ticket fare is allowed in Rajahamsa and lower class of services (no concession in Volvo, sleeper and other premium services).
Document: Relevant identification card or certificate from the transport corporation.
Remark: No clarity whether the concession is only for Karnataka domicile, Indian citizen or is universal.

Maharashtra:
Eligibility: Aged 65 and above.
Concession: 50% concession in ticket fare
Document: Election ID card or Tahsildar certificate.
Remark: BEST buses in Mumbai offer no concession. The link below has information only in Marathi.

Delhi:

Document: Certificate of Age proof + Proof of residence of Delhi & attested 'pass form' from Gazetted Officer/MLA/MP to certify. Senior citizens will be entitled to get the benefit without any income limit w.e.f. 01/10/2011.

Chandigarh:
Eligibility: Aged 65 and above.
Concession: 50% concession in ticket fare for travelling inside Chandigarh only. In case travelling out of Chandigarh, then the fare inside the territory will be under concession, and the rest will be normal fare.
Document: ID cards issued by the concerned authority.

The following states are mentioned to offer some concessions, but I could find no official details regarding the same. Still mentioning them here as some unofficial websites claim some sort of concession for seniors in these states.

Kerala:
Free for freedom fighters above 60 years of age.

Tamil Nadu:
10% concession is given if express ticket is booked by a senior citizen. I could not find any official reference.
Petitions for 50% concession has already been presented to the government. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle4755172.ece

Goa:
There is some concession available for senior citizens, but not clear what. http://ktclgoa.com/pass-system.html

Punjab:
Some websites claim completely free for women over 60 years, or for both men and women above 60 years. I could not find any official reference.

Arunachal Pradesh:
There is some concession available, but not clear whether applicable for senior citizens.

A commendable effort. It is true that there are lack of clarity in the Orders mentioned in the respective websites. It is also true that ground reality may be quite different than what has been projected in the Orders. The thread will be enriched if IMers share their own actual experience in the matter.

Thanks everyone.
As Ashishda said, we would really be looking forward for more feedback about the actual situation from the ground.

That is bad news. Some websites had insisted senior concession of 10% in express buses in Tamil Nadu.
May be only if seats are reserved in advance? Some thing like that?

I think that should be "whaling" not "waling". So it would include harpoons, for example?

Well, I showed my Tamil Nadu Driver's Licence as ID, and I look fairly western, so it's probably universal.

corrected the typo to 'walking stick'.
Did I just see a truck go by which had a 'harpoon please OK Tata' on its bumper?

Well, your driver has real advantages over the younger ones, you know.
