Child Car Seats - Necessary? I will be in India with my 1-year-old daughter and am wondering if anyone has traveled with child car seats? I understand there may not be seat belts for such items. We'll be hiring a car in Chennai and driving to Nellore and then to Bangalore and Mysore. I am a bit mixed about taking her seat - I consider the risk of vehicle accident greater than most of the illnesses we might pick up, but when I ask my ex-pat Indian friends about the car seat issue, they scoff at me. Pretty typical, since it seems most people freak out about minor risks and ignore bigger ones. So, am I being overly concerned?

No. The attitude to safety is awful. I have NRI friends in UK who expose their children to dreadful risks, despite the UK laws, by not using car seats appropriate to the age of their ofspring.

The question is, are the cars you will be travelling in equipped to have a child seat installed? Ambassadors: No. Some of the newer models: Maybe, but is the specific child seat going to fit?

Thanks for the posts. I think I'll take the seat and if if doesn't fit, we'll stick it with the luggage. I'll return the end of Jan and report on the experience. As uptight as many parents are, I would expect there are others with this question. So, hopefully, my experience will inform. ![]()

I was just in India for 6 months with a 2 y.o. Would have liked to use a carseat, but none of the cars we ended up in had rear seat belts. So, from my experience it's a moot question.

Hi, Just checkout at www.fourwheeldriveindia.com as they provide child safety seat to their clients and they have different training program for their drivers, as the owner of the company has HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) background and worked couple of MNC. Good Luck!
